The Hunter has quickly become one of the key late-spring features, and this year’s edition brings together a deep mix of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent.

Newcastle generally rewards horses who can absorb early pressure and still maintain a strong finish, and this looks another tactical contest where race shape will be crucial.

Brad Davidson has assessed the form closely, and one proven performer on this day again takes top billing.

Brad Davidson’s Selections

3 – 14 – 11 – 1 – 16

3. Coal Crusher

Loves this day every year and arrives ready to peak fourth-up. He was terrific when trapped wide without cover in the Russell Balding Stakes and still kept fighting.

He rolls forward, makes his own luck, and gives another huge sight.

The market has him right, but he deserves it.

14. Yorkshire

Clearly has the talent to become the best horse to come out of the race, and early markets reflect that confidence.

The query is the long break and whether he’s forward enough for a genuine grand-final style assignment first-up.

11. Accredited

Beaten on the line fresh and will improve sharply from that run.

Very genuine, handles all conditions, and maps to get every chance.

1. Iowna Merc

Big odds but capable of running a race.

Strong two back in the Sydney Stakes before struggling on a tough Randwick surface last start.

Can bounce back with the right run.

16. Clear Thinking

Outstanding return in the Kosciuszko, helped by a strong tempo, but she’s progressing the right way and can hit the frame.
