WOW! What an incredible Saturday of thoroughbred racing we witnessed last weekend, with Flemington and Randwick delivering some outstanding Group racing, brilliant individual performances and plenty of results for punters to celebrate.
The spring carnival is now in full swing, and the quality of racing continues to rise with each passing week.
We had Group 1 stars stamping their authority, some emerging contenders putting their hands up for bigger assignments and a few very impressive performances that will be worth following over the coming weeks.
And this Saturday promises more of the same, with Caulfield Guineas Day taking centre stage in Melbourne and another terrific program at Rosehill.
But first, let's look back at a massive weekend of racing!
Last Saturday’s Racing Review
Cosmic Crusader Answers the Critics at Flemington
A few months ago, there was plenty of debate among punters and racing gurus about whether Cosmic Crusader could measure up and win a genuine Group 1 race this spring.
Well, that question has been answered emphatically!
I've been firmly in the camp that this galloper would be right in the mix at Group 1 level, and he certainly justified that confidence in the Turnbull Stakes at Flemington.
With the Wizard of the West, William Pike, doing the steering, Cosmic Crusader produced a dominant performance to win by 1.75 lengths.
In the end, there was only one horse punters needed to be watching!
Early leader Light Infantry Man fought on strongly for second, while Aeliana worked home nicely into third, suggesting she's progressing well towards her main spring targets.
Meanwhile, the jury is now out on Sir Delius, who could manage only fourth.
It was a fascinating race that has certainly reshaped the discussion around some of the major spring features.
The Next Episode Delivers in the Danehill Stakes
The Danehill Stakes produced one of the finishes of the afternoon, with The Next Episode charging home late to snatch victory.
Trained by Ciaron Maher and ridden by Mark Zahra, the talented youngster launched a powerful finishing burst to grab race favourite Natural Fling right on the line.
Mbube finished third, with Alibaba rounding out the first four.
It was another reminder of just how dangerous the Maher stable can be when targeting the major spring races.
And the stable wasn't finished there!
Mr Monaco Books His Melbourne Cup Ticket
Ciaron Maher added another runner to his Melbourne Cup team when Mr Monaco claimed the Lexus Bart Cummings.
The victory was achieved with plenty of authority, earning the galloper a coveted place in Australia's most famous race.
With the Melbourne Cup rapidly approaching, the Maher stable continues to build an imposing hand.
And while the stable was enjoying success in Melbourne, it was also making its presence felt north of the border.
Maher Dominates the Randwick Group Races
At Randwick, the Ciaron Maher stable continued its outstanding afternoon with more Group success.
The talented mare Tempted, sent out a $1.60 favourite, produced a dazzling turn of foot to win her Group 2 assignment by approximately three lengths.
Savvy Hallie was gallant in defeat, finishing second, while Marhoona and Grafterburners filled the next two positions.
Both minor placegetters showed enough to suggest they have wins ahead of them as their preparations continue.
The stable then claimed another major prize when Juja Kibo proved far too strong in the Group 2 Metropolitan over 2400m.
It was an ultra-impressive staying performance, with Aethelwulf, The Euphrates and Green Spaces left to fight out the minor placings.
The Maher operation is absolutely flying, and there's every reason to expect more success as the carnival rolls on.
Global Goal Claims the Flight Stakes
The Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m provided another memorable result for trainer John Sargent.
Sargent has built a reputation for developing quality three-year-old fillies, particularly during the spring, and Global Goal added another major success to that record.
She proved strongest when it mattered, defeating De Armas and Bangkok Hottie to claim the Group 1 prize.
It was a terrific result for connections and another performance that deserves plenty of credit.
God's Window Produces an Epsom Upset
One of the biggest performances of the afternoon came in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, where God's Window produced an explosive finishing burst to win at $34.
The lightweight runner from the powerful Chris Waller stable was partnered by apprentice Siena Grima, who was having her very first Group 1 ride.
And what a way to announce yourself on the big stage!
God's Window unleashed a devastating sprint halfway down the Randwick straight, powering past his rivals to score by 1.68 lengths.
It was as though the pair had been fired out of a cannon!
The tough topweight Ceolwulf battled on bravely for second, with Tom Kitten finishing third and the $101 outsider Plymouth grabbing fourth.
A sensational result for those punters who found the winner at such a massive price.

Daniel Pryor’s Around The Grounds – Caulfield & Rosehill 10/10/26
This Saturday – Caulfield Guineas Day & Rosehill
Now we turn our attention to another outstanding weekend of spring racing.
Caulfield Guineas Day is one of the major highlights of the Melbourne Spring Carnival, and Saturday's program features three Group 1 races:
-
Caulfield Guineas
-
Toorak Handicap
-
Might And Power Stakes
Throw in the Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races supporting those features, and we've got an outstanding afternoon of betting opportunities.
There will be plenty of attention on the major Group 1 contenders, but I'm equally interested in finding those runners who have been building towards a peak performance away from the spotlight.
Meanwhile, Rosehill has a strong program of its own, with Group 2, Group 3 and Listed events providing some excellent betting races.
Both meetings offer plenty of depth, and I've thoroughly enjoyed working through the form to find runners capable of delivering for punters.
Hopefully, I've uncovered a few winners at attractive prices!
This Week’s Free Tips!!!!
Caulfield
Race 3 – #1 Surfin Bird – $3.10
Surfin Bird is an on-speed runner who looks well placed to produce a big performance second-up.
Her record at this stage of a preparation isn't particularly impressive, but there was plenty to like about her return.
She took up the running first-up and gave a strong sight, only being caught late before finishing fourth.
That effort suggests she's returned in good order, and she now gets another opportunity to use her natural early speed.
With the rail back in the True position, there could be an advantage for runners settling close to the pace early in the meeting.
If Surfin Bird can find the front and dictate terms, she'll take plenty of catching.
At around $3.10, she looks a strong winning chance and deserves her position near the top of betting.
Race 3 – #5 On Display – $4.20
On Display brings excellent recent form into this race and looks the main danger to Surfin Bird.
Her latest performance was full of merit after she appeared to have the race won before being caught right on the line and finishing third.
It was a terrific effort, and she now gets another opportunity to go one better.
Unlike Surfin Bird, On Display is expected to settle towards the rear of the field, so the early tempo will be particularly important.
If the leaders generate enough pressure, she should be able to work into the race before unleashing her strong finishing burst.
On Display has the ability to finish over the top of them if the race is run to suit.
Race 4 – Machine Gun Gracie – $9.50
Machine Gun Gracie looks beautifully placed to produce her best performance of the preparation.
She's now fourth-up and should be approaching peak fitness, with the rise to 2400m a major positive.
Her record at the distance is outstanding, having won both previous attempts.
What I've particularly liked about her three runs this campaign is the way she's continued to work strongly through the line, suggesting the extra distance is exactly what she's looking for.
She also has the tactical versatility to make her own luck, settling on or close to the speed rather than relying on everything falling into place from the rear.
This looks a suitable target for a mare ready to peak.
At $9.50, Machine Gun Gracie is one of the more appealing value runners on the Caulfield program.
Race 5 – #2 Point Barrow – $2.80
Point Barrow is a genuine track-and-distance specialist who looks extremely well placed to continue her winning form.
She gets a similar setup to her latest victory and has already demonstrated how effective her powerful finishing burst can be under these conditions.
The wide barrier means she'll likely settle towards the rear, but that shouldn't be a major concern if she gets the opportunity to build momentum.
Her ability to accelerate strongly late is a significant weapon, particularly when racing at her preferred track and distance.
With the right tempo, she can round up her opposition again.
Point Barrow looks one of the hardest runners to beat at Caulfield.
Rosehill
Race 8 – #4 General Salute – $8
General Salute looks capable of making it consecutive victories after an impressive performance last start.
He enjoyed a favourable run outside the leader on that occasion, travelling comfortably before proving too strong in the finish.
A similar scenario looks possible here.
He should be able to work forward and secure an economical position close to the pace, giving himself every opportunity to produce another strong performance.
His tactical speed is a major advantage, particularly if the race develops in favour of those settling near the lead.
At $8, General Salute looks a terrific winning chance and should give punters a massive sight.
Race 8 – #1 Gringotts – $6.50
Gringotts is a proven performer with strong form references that make him difficult to dismiss.
He drops back to 1400m, a distance at which he has previously been successful, and his record in this grade suggests he is more than capable of measuring up.
The key will be how the race unfolds.
While General Salute should enjoy a position close to the speed, Gringotts is expected to be doing his best work late.
If the leaders begin to tire, he has the ability to launch a powerful finishing run and sweep over the top.
Gringotts is a major winning threat and one of the strongest dangers in the race.
Race 9 – #2 Tuileries – $12
Tuileries is a talented mare who looks ready to make her presence felt first-up.
She's been prepared for her return with two trials and appears to have found a suitable race to launch her campaign.
There is still plenty of upside with this mare, and I expect she has more victories ahead of her.
She should improve further when stepping up to 1400m later in the preparation, but that doesn't mean she can't be competitive fresh.
Her ability is good enough to make her a genuine winning chance immediately.
At double-figure odds around $12, Tuileries looks well worth including in the betting.
Race 9 – #8 Gerringong – $5
Gerringong is another runner who looks capable of making an impact first-up.
She's shown plenty of ability in previous preparations, particularly when given the opportunity to settle and produce a strong finishing effort.
Her recent trial at Doomben was encouraging, winning in good style and suggesting she's returned in excellent condition.
That preparation should have her ready to run well fresh.
There is plenty to like about her prospects here, and she also looks a runner worth following as her campaign progresses.
At $5, Gerringong has a genuine opportunity to feature prominently.
Race 10 – #9 Fierce – $3.30
Fierce is a nicely bred, progressive galloper with an excellent record from a relatively short career.
He's finished in the first two on five occasions from six starts, winning three races along the way.
That level of consistency highlights his ability, and there looks to be further improvement ahead.
The key will be securing a clean run.
If he can stay out of the early hustle and bustle and find clear running when required, he should be able to finish strongly over the concluding stages.
He has the profile of a horse capable of progressing through the grades, and this looks another suitable opportunity.
Fierce is a leading winning chance at $3.30 and can finish the Rosehill program on a high.
