The month of March Madness kicked off in style last Saturday with some outstanding racing at Flemington and Randwick, and it certainly delivered for punters.

The action on the track was jaw-dropping and set the tone perfectly for the big weeks of autumn racing ahead.

I mentioned last week that we could land a few early collects across the cards, and that’s exactly how it played out.

Across the two meetings we managed to find 13 winners from 17 races tipped, with the Free Tip Package producing some good returns, while the Full Package subscribers were rewarded even further with numerous winners and novelty dividends.

Looking back across the last fortnight, the numbers are very strong with 23 winners from 35 races tipped and selected, which tells me I’m seeing the races and race shapes well at the moment.

Confidence is sky high heading deeper into the autumn carnival.

Last Week in Review

At Flemington (Headquarters) we saw Tom Kitten claim back-to-back All-Star Mile victories, becoming the first dual winner of the event.

Pride Of Jenni rolled to the front as expected in her first run of the preparation, and punters were likely wondering how far she would win by. However Evaporate and Tom Kitten, both fitter from recent racing, stayed within striking distance throughout.

By the 300m mark they were levelling up, and by the 200m they had surged past, with Tom Kitten proving strongest late to defeat Evaporate while Pride Of Jenni held on for third.

Several runners behind them also produced strong performances, making this race a key form reference going forward.

At Randwick, the Group 1 Randwick Guineas saw the Victorian training partnership of Moody and Coleman bring their talented filly Sheza Alibi to Sydney where she defeated the colts convincingly, winning by over three lengths.

She looks an outstanding filly and it will be fascinating to see where she heads next.

Looking Forward to this Week

This Saturday (14 March) features one Group 1 race — the Coolmore Classic (1500m) for fillies and mares at Rosehill.

The honour roll of this race over the past 25 years includes stars such as Sunline, Tuesday Joy, Typhoon Tracy, Alverta, Espiona and Lady Shenandoah, and this year’s edition looks another open and competitive contest.

My top-rated runner is Lazzura, who looks capable of going one better after a narrow defeat last start. That run should have her perfectly primed heading into this assignment.

James McDonald, who is riding in sensational form, will be aboard again.

He has won the Coolmore Classic twice recently on Zougotcha and Lady Shenandoah, and another victory would edge him closer to Damien Oliver’s record of 129 Group 1 wins.

Chris Waller also saddles Firestorm in the race, and with several genuine chances engaged it shapes as a terrific betting race.

The Rosehill card is further supported by four Group 3 races and two Group 2 events, ensuring a full day of quality racing for punters.

Meanwhile at Caulfield, the rail is out 9 metres the entire circuit, which may be worth monitoring early in the meeting.

The feature race is the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes, a weight-for-age contest formerly known as the St George Stakes.

That race has produced champions such as Northerly, Lonhro and Elvstroem, and this year’s edition features a small field of eight where several leading chances look well drawn and likely to be prominent in running.

The remainder of the Caulfield program is a VOBIS raceday, offering significant bonuses for eligible horses, which always produces some competitive racing.

Daniel Pryor – Saturday Feature Racing Preview 14/3/26

Rosehill

Race 2

No.8 O’Sheamus $12

The 1900m trip may be ideal here. Ran in the VRC Derby during the spring and the Observer form line should hold up.

Hard to ignore at double-figure odds.

Race 5

No.5 Wotton Verni $3.70

First run at the track but he loves the 2000m, winning four of five attempts at the distance.

His last start suggests this race suits and James McDonald takes the ride again, having won on him previously.

Race 6 – 4 Way Win Play / Novelties

No.1 Enriched $10
No.3 Flying Fun $10
No.5 La Fracas $9.50
No.2 Kerguelen $5.50

Two of these runners should settle on pace, while others will be coming from off the speed.

The race shape could suit either pattern, and there is genuine value across the field.

Race 7

No.8 Federalist $23

Still a maiden after seven starts but a nicely bred galloper who has been trialling well in Melbourne.

His recent Pakenham run over 1400m produced a strong finishing second.

With a strong tempo expected, he could be the one finishing late over 1500m.

Race 8

No.1 Lazzura $5

Looks fitter second-up and brings strong form into the race.

Her last run should have her cherry ripe for the Coolmore Classic.

Handles all surfaces and should be right in the finish.

Caulfield

Race 5 – 4 Way Win Play / Novelties

No.2 Rohesia $7
No.3 Toronado Queen $8
No.6 High On The Hill $5.50
No.8 Empire Song $9.50

  • Rohesia should settle closer than last start which gives her every chance.

  • Toronado Queen has drawn wide but possesses the tactical speed to cross and lead.

  • High On The Hill is the only 3YO colt in the field, coming off a dominant maiden win and showing upside.

  • Empire Song should be prominent and could give a bold sight.

Race 8 – Dual Win Play

No.2 Buckaroo $3

No.1 Light Infantry Man $6

Both drawn inside barriers in a small field and should settle close to the speed.

Both rate strongly at weight-for-age level.

Race 9 – Dual Win Play

No.1 Different Gravy $6.50

No.12 Salty Pearl $2.90

  • Different Gravy has won at the track and distance, and despite drawing wide can run on strongly if the tempo is genuine.

  • Salty Pearl is on the seven-day back-up with blinkers again and should be thereabouts in the finish.
