Daniel Pryor Saturday Horse Racing Tips 16/5/26

Last Saturday’s Group 1 Goodwood Handicap at Morphettville may not have been rated by everyone as a vintage edition in the lead-up, but it certainly delivered a vintage finish.

The field spread right across the track and just over two lengths covered first through to eleventh in one of the tightest and most exciting finishes of the carnival.

At first glance many thought Extragalactic had done enough, including plenty of connections on course, but Desert Lightning got the perfect bob on the line to score at big odds and deliver another Group 1 victory to jockey Luke Nolen and the Moody/Coleman stable.

It was their first Group 1 success together on South Australian soil.

 

 

Grand Larceny and New York Lustre also ran enormous races, both finishing within half a length of the winner in what turned into a terrific sprint contest.

Thankfully Desert Lightning was included in the full subscriber package at the nice price, giving the loyal followers something to cheer about.

This weekend the focus shifts back to Headquarters at Flemington for a very competitive card stacked with value opportunities.

At the same time the Queensland Winter Carnival begins to heat up with the running of the Group 1 Doomben 10,000, which has attracted a deep field of genuine winning chances.

We also head north to Scone for Day 2 of the carnival where the Listed features include the Denise’s Joy Stakes, Ortensia Stakes and the Dark Jewel Classic.

Looks suited rising from 1100m to 1400m after a strong second placing in fast time against the two-year-olds.

He was building through the line late and gave every indication the extra trip will suit nicely.

 

Race 4

Short priced favourite but hard to knock.

She has looked dominant in her past two runs, including a six-length demolition over 1400m last start.

The drop back to the Flemington straight 1200m is the slight query, but often strong 1400m horses thrive in these straight races.

Very open race and I think there’s genuine value here.

The top selections all profile well in different ways and this looks the type of race where finding the right price horse could prove profitable.

Looks close to a win this campaign and any rain around should only help. Expecting him to be very strong late.

James McDonald takes the ride and links with the stable for the first time aboard this unbeaten two-year-old.

Two starts for two wins and looks capable of remaining undefeated.
