The Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales have taken centre stage this week, with the thoroughbred industry firmly focused on the Gold Coast.

After the completion of Day 2, more than 450 lots have gone under the hammer and already eight yearlings have fetched seven-figure price tags.

Whether that number grows further remains to be seen, but it’s been a fascinating watch as always during Magic Millions week.

Last weekend at Flemington, the free selections Conscience, Laa De Shaa and Behaviour all found market support and ran honest races without quite getting the job done.

They’re horses worth sticking with next time around.

The highlight came in the full package, however, with Porter landing at $7 for those who followed, a nice value collect.

This weekend I’ve cast the net wide across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia, hunting out value plays.

We kick off at Headquarters before working our way around the country.

On The Punt With Pryor – Around the Grounds Best Bets 17/1/26

Flemington

Race 10 – No.1 BUCCLEUCH ($4.50)

Won three straight races as a two-year-old through June and July, including two strong wins at Flemington where he clearly relished the spacious track.

Looked a horse with upside, even if early Derby dreams were shelved last spring.

The big Flemington circuit suits him ideally and I’m keen to see how he returns after winning a recent jump-out.

He profiles as a three-year-old who could be heading toward autumn middle-distance races.

I’m very keen to be with him here.

Bet: WIN

Rosehill

Race 10 – No.1 PIPPIE BEACH ($12)

Has returned in good order with two solid runs this preparation, most recently finishing well in the Group 3 Belle of the Turf Stakes at Gosford.

Third-up here and a proven Rosehill performer, she gets in nicely with the apprentice claim.

She’ll settle back but should be strongest late in a race that shapes to be run at a genuine tempo.

Handles all conditions and becomes even more appealing if the track worsens.

Excellent value at double figures.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Gold Coast

Race 3 – No.6 LADY MOSCATO ($3.10)

Lightly raced but has trialled ultra-impressively.

Nicely bred and looks ready to run a bold race first-up.

Race 8 – No.1 NINJA ($1.80)

Slow away last start but improved sharply, swept wide and absolutely put them away late.

Carries strong form lines and looks the one they all need to beat.

Race 9 – No.5 DEPTH OF CHARACTER ($20)

Has residual fitness after competing in the Railway and Northerly Stakes during The Pinnacles in Perth.

Drawn wide over 1400m but could either press forward or benefit from a strong tempo.

At big odds, he’s worth a ticket.

Race 10 – No.14 ROSELYN’S STAR ($2.80)

Sydney visitor who has trialled nicely leading into this Class 6 Plate.

Has shown ability in previous campaigns and deserves favouritism.

Doomben

Race 6 – No.11 INNERVISIONS ($4.50)

Has been ultra consistent this preparation. Missed out on the Magic Millions Country Cup Sprint Final but lands well here with barrier 1.

Early market support is encouraging and a positive ride could see him break through.

Murray Bridge

Race 2 – No.3 PRINCESS QUE ($2.80)

Melbourne form reads well in this company and she looks capable of controlling the race from the front with the right run.

Race 7 – No.5 PANTOJA ($7)

Half-brother to Giga Kick and now with a new stable.

Trialled well, draws ideally and should get a cosy run just behind the speed before letting rip late.

Race 9 – No.2 PALM OF JUMERIAH ($3.60)

Back to mares grade after tackling stronger company at Flemington.

The apprentice claim brings her right into calculations and she maps well.

As the Magic Millions carnival rolls on, hopefully these around-the-grounds plays help land a few winners for the punters this Saturday, January 17 — everywhere except my own backyard in Perth.
