Another solid weekend for the followers with a handful of winners found across the three meetings assessed, highlighted by a massive result at Scone where Tuileries saluted at double-figure odds as the only race previewed from the Carnival meeting.
Queensland stole the spotlight with the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 and what a result it was for the locals.
Veteran sprinter Rothfire turned back the clock at $61 for trainer Rob Heathcote, finally delivering the stable a deserved victory in the feature after several near misses over the years.
Brad Rawiller produced a terrific front-running ride and the old warrior fought them off strongly to score from Spicy Martini and Napoleonic, while favourite Jimmysstar boxed on into fourth.
At Flemington, Concord Connie continued her impressive rise through the grades with another dominant display for Charlotte Littlefield.
Despite jumping a short-priced favourite, she again controlled the race professionally and looked to have plenty in reserve late.
Flying Done was brave in defeat and looks a horse worth following through the winter.
The Listed Andrew Ramsden Stakes also produced an important staying performance with Zakouma booking himself a golden ticket into this year’s Melbourne Cup.
Grahame Begg’s stayer was too strong late under Jordan Childs and now heads to a spell with spring ambitions firmly on the radar.
This Saturday the focus remains in Queensland with the Group 1 Doomben Cup over 2000m.
Only seven runners line up, but it shapes as a fascinating tactical battle headed by Pride Of Jenni, Birdman and Half Yours, who dominate betting markets heading into raceday.
Pride Of Jenni was outstanding in the Hollindale Stakes when allowed to roll along in front and the key question again becomes whether the field lets her dictate cheaply.
Birdman looks one of the major threats if conditions improve, while Half Yours should appreciate the wet ground and longer trip as he continues to build fitness this campaign.
It promises to be a fascinating contest for punters and racing fans alike.
