The curtain has officially come down on the Magic Millions Yearling Sales and Race Day, and what a week it was.
From the theatre of the sales ring to the drama on track—and ultimately in the steward’s room—there was no shortage of talking points.
The protest in the 3YO Magic Millions Guineas, while ultimately dismissed, certainly divided punters and added another layer to an already gripping carnival.
With the Gold Coast now in the rear-view mirror, attention quickly turns across the Tasman to Karaka Millions, kicking off this Sunday 25 January, with race day on 29 January.
I’ll be watching closely to see which young stars emerge from New Zealand’s premier sale and what that means for the upcoming seasons.
Big Racing Ahead – Caulfield & Randwick
Back on home soil, racing really starts to heat up as we edge closer to autumn.
Caulfield this Saturday hosts a strong program highlighted by the Group 3 Manfred Stakes (1200m) for three-year-olds, alongside two quality Listed events—the W.J. Adams Stakes (1000m) and the John Dillon Stakes (1400m).
The juveniles also take centre stage, with the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (Fillies) and the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (Colts & Geldings) offering our first serious clues ahead of the autumn’s major two-year-old features.
Add in a deep support card, and there’s genuine value to be found right through the day.
Up in Sydney, Randwick plays host to the Listed Carrington Stakes (1400m), supported by a card stacked with evenly matched races.
Early markets suggest plenty of depth, with very few runners under $3 and most races looking close to 5-1 the field.
With the rail out 6 metres and the track currently rated Soft 7, it’ll be crucial to monitor any bias—especially with clear weather forecast that could see an upgrade by race time.

Last Week’s Review – Free vs Premium
It was a mixed bag last weekend, depending on which package you followed.
Free Package Review
While I didn’t manage to land a winner in the free selections, we were far from disgraced:
-
Four seconds and a third, which would have gone a long way for place players.
-
A touch of luck and the results look very different.

-
