Wow, what a weekend of sport and racing we witnessed!

Rosehill and Caulfield delivered on the track, while the Lions certainly turned it on when it mattered in the AFL Grand Final.

At Rosehill, the feature was the Group 1 Golden Rose, where Bjorn Baker and Rachel King combined with Warwoven.

Barrier one proved ideal as he landed just behind the speed before exploding clear in the straight to win by more than three lengths from St Gotthard, Under Focus and roughie Tennenbaum.

The supporting card also produced some quality Group 2 and Group 3 winners in Lazzura, Skyhook and Blue Door.

Mornington didn't feature any Group racing, but it was still a quality meeting and the highlight for us came in the Listed Ansett Cup.

Hurry Curry was a FREE TIP at $14, and the rise to 2400m proved exactly the right recipe.

Subscribers also had the runner-up, producing a $43 Quinella and $102 Exacta.

Then it was onto Caulfield on Sunday, perhaps a little blurry-eyed after Grand Final Day, for another outstanding card.

The Group 1 Manikato Stakes belonged to Jimmysstar, with his loyal followers rewarded as he launched late over 1200m.

Extragalactic lost no admirers in second, ahead of Charm Stone and Oliveanotherday, who now heads to the spelling paddock after a very promising preparation.

Pride Of Jenni was back doing what she does best in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes, controlling the 1600m from the front and defeating Treasurethemoment, who rallied again in the straight without ever seriously threatening the winner.

Diameter was another FREE TIP, getting the job done at $3.40 in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes. His previous run had put the writing on the wall, and James McDonald found the gap when it mattered to get his head down right on the line.

Daniel Pryor’s Around The Grounds – Flemington & Randwick 3/10/26

Raceday Preview

Now we head to one of the most important weekends of the spring, with outstanding cards at Flemington and Randwick.

At Flemington, it's Turnbull Stakes Day – otherwise known as Moving Day.

Run well here and suddenly the path towards the major races of Cup Week looks a whole lot brighter. Run poorly and those spring plans can change quickly.

One pattern I've noticed over the years is just how strong the form coming out of this Flemington meeting can be.

It's a card worth following closely, with horses emerging from it and winning at all sorts of prices over the following 12 months.

The Group 1 Turnbull Stakes headlines a program packed with Group 2, Group 3 and Listed racing.

Randwick has two Group 1 mile features in the Epsom Handicap and Flight Stakes, and both are fascinating races.

One of the major talking points in the Epsom is unbeaten Kiwi mare Well Written, who arrives from across the Tasman with a perfect seven wins from seven starts for trainer Stephen Marsh.

She now gets her biggest test on Australian soil.

There's also plenty of interest at the opposite end of the age spectrum, with the new crop of two-year-olds stepping out in the Maribyrnong Trial, Breeders' Plate and Gimcrack Stakes.

The first crop of Anamoe progeny will be particularly interesting after some encouraging trials from his juveniles.

And then there's the weather.

Melbourne has received plenty of rain in the lead-up, meaning Heavy-track form could become crucial at Flemington, while rain is also forecast for Sydney on Saturday.

Plenty to get through, so let's find some winners!

This Week’s Free Tips

Flemington

Race 4 – #4 Salann – $26

Salann remains a maiden, but there has been enough quality around his form to suggest he can be competitive at a big price.

The rise to 1600m should suit, while he's already shown an ability to handle testing conditions with a previous second placing on a Heavy track.

Expect him to be doing some of his strongest work late.

At around $26, he's a genuine value chance.

Race 4 – #17 Nikitria – $19

Nikitria comes into this after a nice last-start victory and can continue progressing.

The runner-up from that race has since performed well, giving the form another boost.

The possibility of a rain-affected Flemington shouldn't be a problem, and she's one worth following as she continues through the preparation.

At around $19, there's plenty of value on offer.

Race 9 – #3 Arkansaw Kid – $8.50

Arkansaw Kid has some strong Heavy-track statistics, which become increasingly important given the weather around Flemington.

His figures suggest he's going well enough to return to the winner's circle and he should be right in the contest for a long way down the Flemington straight.

At $8.50, he gets his chance under conditions that could play firmly in his favour.

Randwick

Race 1 – #1 Columbus – $2.80

Columbus has started favourite at his past five runs and converted three of those opportunities into victories.

He's consistently around the mark in this grade and gets another positive with a top jockey booked.

He should find a lovely position just behind the speed, and provided clear running presents approaching the straight, he should be right in the finish again.

Race 10 – #18 Surf’s Up – $8.50

Surf's Up draws nicely to receive an economical run and gets in particularly well at the weights.

That should allow plenty to be saved for the business end of the race.

The key will simply be finding clear running at the right time. If the gap appears, Surf's Up gets his chance to strike at a good price.

Race 10 – #14 Nepo Baby – $9

Nepo Baby was good first-up after drawing wide and being forced to settle back in the field.

She should strip fitter for that performance and gets a much better setup this time from the inside draw, allowing her to settle much closer to the speed.

She's already attracted support since markets opened, but at around $9 there's still enough value to get involved.

Expect a much more favourable run second-up and a big chance to bounce.
