The new racing season is well underway and after an eventful opening weekend, attention now turns to Randwick and Caulfield Heath for another quality day of racing.
Last Saturday's Group 3 Aurie's Star Handicap produced an unexpected result after hot favourite War Machine crashed through the barriers and was withdrawn before the start.
That opened the race right up and Queensland trainer Tony Gollan capitalised, with Boomtown Boss proving too strong from Royal Insignia, Arkansaw Kid and Ndola.
This weekend, Randwick hosts the first Sydney Group race of the new season with the Group 2 Missile Stakes over 1200 metres.
Despite attracting a compact field, it's a fascinating contest with a mix of proven first-up performers and race-fit gallopers.
Angel Capital and Gangsta Granny head the market, but runners like Napoleonic, Ninja and Bjorn Baker's Midnight Dynamite all bring genuine winning claims.
With Moonee Valley temporarily out of action due to track renovations, Caulfield Heath takes centre stage in Victoria.
It's a deep and competitive program where there looks to be plenty of value if we can land on the right runners.
Here are my best bets for the weekend.
Daniel Pryor's Around The Grounds – Randwick & Caulfield Heath 8/8/26
Randwick
Race 4 – #1 Masoun
Masoun gets the opportunity to settle into a perfect position from a favourable draw over the staying trip.
He should enjoy a soft run behind the speed, tracking several of the key chances before getting his opportunity to peel out in the straight. If the gaps appear at the right time, he'll be very hard to hold out.
Race 8 – Group 2 Missile Stakes
#7 Gangsta Granny – $3.80
Gangsta Granny has always shown plenty of ability and looks primed to make a winning return.
She maps to settle just behind the speed, conserving energy before getting every chance to finish over the top late.
#1 Angel Capital – $2.80
Angel Capital is the proven first-up horse in the field and deserves favouritism.
If he returns in the same order as previous campaigns, he'll be launching down the outside late and is clearly one of the hardest to beat.
Race 9 – #1 Mareth
Mareth may be slightly short of his ideal distance fresh, but his first-up record demands respect.
He looks well placed against this opposition and has the class to make his presence felt first-up.
Caulfield Heath
Race 2
#6 Botanical Boy – $4.00
Botanical Boy maps to enjoy an ideal run from a favourable draw and should take plenty of improvement from his first-up effort.
Second-up fitness and a soft run in transit make him a genuine winning chance.
#11 Celtics – $2.50
Celtics has been racing consistently, only finding one better at his past two starts.
He again profiles beautifully with a solid tempo expected to allow him to finish strongly and justify his position near the top of betting.
Race 7
#11 The Devil In Her – $13.00
The Devil In Her appeals as the value runner of the meeting.
She'll settle off the speed, exactly where she wants to be, and with a genuine tempo expected, can launch late at attractive double-figure odds.
#10 Oraqua – $5.00
Oraqua returns from a strong Randwick performance where she finished third and only needs to reproduce that effort to be a major player.
She brings solid form into the race and deserves her place among the leading chances.
Last Week's Results
Last weekend didn't quite go to plan, with only two winners from the selections despite several runners finishing in the placings.
The confidence remains high heading into another strong weekend of racing, with plenty of opportunities to bounce back as the quality of racing continues to build towards the Spring Carnival.
