David Gately Horse Racing Tips for Caulfield 9/5/26

David Gately heads to Caulfield expecting rain affected conditions, with the rail pushed right out to 12m after on pace runners dominated the previous meeting around the circle circuit.

With cold weather and further rain forecast, Gately is focusing on runners proven in softer ground and horses capable of holding position when the pressure goes on late.

The previous meeting saw runners edge away from the inside as the day progressed, but importantly, on pace runners still controlled the circle races. With the rail moving further out and rain expected, tactical positioning again looks important.

Caulfield Race 9 – #17 Marsept

Marsept looks a very exciting horse in the making and profiles beautifully again here.

He created a strong impression during the trials before resuming with an excellent effort behind Extragalactic, who has since franked the form at Group level.

That run was produced in slick overall time and suggested he had returned in terrific order.

His maiden win last start only strengthened that opinion.

Despite a slower early tempo than another smart winner on the program, he still ran faster overall time and did it with authority.

The way he travelled and quickened through the line suggested there is still plenty more upside to come.

If he handles the conditions, he looks the horse they all have to beat.

Caulfield Race 5 – #8 Makdane

Makdane appeals as the value runner on the card.

He resumes here with a strong fresh profile and brings excellent spring form into this race.

His narrow defeat to Farhh Flung came with a significant weight swing against him, and he subsequently beat all but Group 1 placed Zambardo in another quality performance.

Importantly, he looked sharp in a recent trial and gave every indication he has returned in strong order.

At double figure odds, Gately believes he is being underrated by the market and profiles as a genuine winning chance.
