The Group 1 Coolmore Classic shapes as one of the most fascinating races on the Rosehill program, with a deep field of mares bringing strong form through the Surround Stakes and the Guy Walter Stakes.

With several key form lines intersecting, it sets up as a race where positioning and early tempo could prove crucial.

Many of the leading chances arrive through the Surround Stakes, which rated strongly relative to the older mares races on the same card.

Meanwhile the Guy Walter Stakes has also produced a number of runners stepping into this contest, giving punters several key form references to work through.

With the race run over 1500 metres, the ability to settle well and finish strongly will be vital, particularly given several runners in the field are proven performers at 1500–1600 metres.

David Gately – Coolmore Classic Preview 12/3/26

David Gately’s Race Assessment

#6 OLE DANCER

Did more work early than Savvy Hallie in that same Surround Stakes, yet battled on strongly to finish 1.8 lengths third, well clear of fourth.

Importantly she was only second-up, while Savvy Hallie was third-up in that race.

She is already proven at 1500–1600 metres and profiles as a mare that is ready to peak now.

#7 SAVVY HALLIE

Made star filly Tempted really dig deep to beat her in the Surround Stakes and that race rated very well relative to the older mares on the day — many of whom line up here.

There is no reason to doubt her at 1500 metres as she was strong through the line last start.

The barrier draw could be the query, as it may force her to do some early work.

#5 ARCTIC GLAMOUR

Produced a terrific return in the Guy Walter Stakes, charging home late.

She now meets the winner 1.5kg better at the weights, and from barrier 1 should be able to settle much closer in the run this time.

Looks the best value in the race around $15.

#2 MANAAL

Gave everything carrying 59kg in the Guy Walter Stakes and that was only her second-up run.

She maps to get a good trail again and is another runner capable of improving further here.

#4 VERONA ROSE

Very good fresh and then settled closer in the Guy Walter Stakes where she was able to run over the top of Manaal late.

She is proven at 1500–1600 metres and again looks likely to get a nice run from the draw.

#1 LAZZURA

Was out-toughed fresh by Cinsault, but that effort came while giving the winner 3kg and race fitness.

Her second-up record is strong, having won the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes in that position last preparation.

She has to be included among the chances.
