David Gately heads to Royal Randwick for a massive Everest Day program, with the wet weather set to play a significant role across one of Sydney's biggest racing meetings.

With plenty of rain falling during the week and further showers forecast, Gator is working to a Soft track and has identified two strong betting opportunities.

Cross Tasman looks ideally placed to return to winning form third-up, while Group 1 winner Marhoona appeals at an attractive price in a competitive sprint.

Track Conditions – Royal Randwick

Randwick is expected to race on a Soft track, with the rail positioned 3m out.

Significant rain fell during the week, with another 3–9mm forecast for Friday and 2–6mm on Saturday. The final track rating will depend on how much additional rain arrives.

At the previous meeting, the rail was in the True position and the track raced fairly on a Soft 6, although runners generally preferred to move away from the inside rail.

With the rail out 3m and more rain expected, monitoring the early races will be important to establish whether the inside lanes remain competitive.

David Gately’s Randwick Saturday Best Bets – Everest Day

Bet of the Day – Race 10 #3 Cross Tasman

Cross Tasman looks ready to peak third-up after two excellent performances to begin his preparation.

He resumed with a narrow defeat in a race that has since produced strong form, suggesting he had returned in terrific order.

His second-up effort was just as encouraging.

Despite conceding 2kg to Decorum, Cross Tasman gave that talented galloper a genuine scare, producing a performance that deserves plenty of credit under the weight conditions.

We'll get another useful reference for the strength of that form through the Silver Eagle in Race 8, which should help establish just how well Cross Tasman is placed later in the program.

The other major positive is his third-up record.

Cross Tasman won at the same stage of his previous preparation, and his first two runs this campaign suggest he's building towards another peak performance.

With race fitness on his side and strong recent form behind him, everything points towards a big performance.

Cross Tasman is Gator's Bet of the Day at Randwick and looks an excellent winning chance in the final race.

Best Value Bet of the Day – Race 6 #15 Marhoona ($8)

Marhoona appeals as one of the better value opportunities on Everest Day, with her latest performance much stronger than the result alone suggests.

She endured a difficult run in the Premiere Stakes, racing wide without cover throughout.

Despite covering additional ground and having little opportunity to conserve energy, she still managed to finish ahead of several key rivals she meets again here.

That effort deserves considerable respect.

Importantly, Marhoona has already demonstrated her ability to produce a peak performance at this stage of a preparation.

She was third-up when claiming the Group 1 Galaxy last campaign, showing tremendous determination to fight off her opposition and secure a top-level victory.

That performance highlighted both her class and her willingness to compete under pressure.

The Galaxy form, combined with her tough effort in the Premiere Stakes, suggests she's capable of improving sharply with another run under her belt.

Saturday's race is a competitive sprint with several genuine chances, but Marhoona has already proven herself at Group 1 level and looks capable of measuring up again.

At around $8, Marhoona represents genuine value in an open contest and is Gator's Best Value Bet of the Day.

Bet Type Race Selection
Bet of the Day Race 10 #3 Cross Tasman
Best Value Bet Race 6 #15 Marhoona

Cross Tasman is the standout winning selection, with his strong first two runs and proven third-up form making him the horse to beat in the last.

Marhoona provides the value play, having overcome a difficult run in the Premiere Stakes and boasting the Group 1 credentials to challenge again at a bigger price.
