David Gately Horse Racing Tips for Flemington 16/5/26

David Gately heads to Flemington expecting a fair surface with the rail pushed out 4 metres after the track played evenly on Anzac Day.

Unlike the strong winds that heavily favoured swoopers at the previous meeting, Saturday’s lighter breeze should allow races to be run more evenly, although Gately still expects runners finishing off strongly to have their chance.

The previous Flemington meeting saw run-on horses dominate due to strong winds making it difficult for leaders to sustain their runs.

With lighter conditions forecast, Gately expects a more balanced setup this time around.

Flemington Race 3 – #2 Lovelycut

Lovelycut looks perfectly placed third-up and gets back into much more suitable company.

Her first-up effort had merit given she raced on the inferior inside section in a race that lacked tempo, while last start she was carrying 58kg against the males and still finished off strongly late after struggling to quicken initially.

The return to racing against her own sex is a major positive and her previous third-up profile suggests she is set to peak here.

If she gets clear running at the right stage, Gately believes she will be very hard to hold out late.

Flemington Race 7 – #13 American Wolf

American Wolf shapes as one of the better value plays on the program.

He won the Adelaide Cup before a six-week freshen and then produced a very tough effort in the Mornington Cup after making an early move from a long way out.

Despite the tough run, he still fought on strongly late.

Importantly, his previous Flemington form stacks up very well, including a St Leger victory over Litzdeel at 2800m.

The spacious Flemington circuit should suit him perfectly and at the current price, Gately believes he is being overlooked by the market.
