Flemington presents as a genuine test this Saturday with the rail pushed right out to 9 metres after being at 6m last week.
Despite the offset rail, the track generally played well, though strong winds clearly influenced race outcomes, particularly in the straight, where winners were coming from the middle and wider lanes.
The forecast South-Easterly breeze (around 20km/h) isn’t extreme, but it may again play a role.
Horses will face the wind around the circle before the home turn, while in straight races it will be a crosswind from the Grandstand side.
Expect riders to remain cautious about using the inside lanes early, especially if exposed to that breeze.
BET OF THE DAY
FLEMINGTON – Race 4 No.14 – YES I KNOW
Had no luck at Ballarat when forced wide due to a riderless horse yet still boxed on well for third.
He then covered ground again last start and simply ran into a very strong rival in Fiorenot, with that race producing fast overall time and sharp sectionals.
He now gets a crucial 2.5kg weight swing, draws much kinder, and the addition of blinkers looks a positive move.
With a smoother run in transit, he gets every chance to turn the tables.
BEST VALUE BET
FLEMINGTON – Race 7 No.9 – MOBY DICK
Caught the eye first-up in the Sweethearted race at Geelong, working home strongly off a soft trial beforehand.
He strips fitter here, gets a 3kg swing at the weights and steps up to 1200m up the Flemington straight, a clear positive.
If the race is run genuinely, his closing strength can put him right into the finish.
Looks overs around the $12 mark.
