Flemington is expected to enjoy warm and dry conditions leading into Saturday, although the race-day forecast remains uncertain.

Between 3mm and 12mm of rain is possible, with the Bureau of Meteorology indicating the most likely arrival is during the afternoon or evening.

That creates some uncertainty around the track rating as the meeting progresses.

The rail returns to the True position after being out 9m on Turnbull Stakes Day, when Flemington raced on a Heavy 10 surface that improved to Heavy 8.

Despite the wet conditions, the track raced reasonably fairly, with on-pace runners not significantly disadvantaged.

In the straight races, winners generally came through the middle and wider sections of the track.

Gator's ratings are based on Good to Soft conditions, although any significant rain during the meeting could influence how the track plays.

 

Bet of the Day – Flemington Race 2 #4 Barracks

Barracks has made an excellent start to his preparation, and David Gately believes he's well placed to return to winning form at Flemington.

He resumed with an impressive victory over Affari, who has since franked that performance with a subsequent win.

That gave the form considerable substance heading into Barracks' second-up assignment.

Last week, he was forced to absorb significant early pressure, with the race run at a particularly strong tempo.

The opening 600m was covered in a sharp 33.6 seconds, making life difficult for the runners involved in the early speed.

Despite that pressure, Barracks fought on strongly and was only caught right on the line.

Gator acknowledges that the track pattern was favourable to on-pace runners that day, which helped Barracks maintain his position.

Nevertheless, the performance still had plenty of merit considering the pace he was required to sustain.

With a win over a subsequent winner first-up and a courageous effort under pressure second-up, Barracks brings strong recent form into Saturday's race.

Best Value Bet of the Day – Flemington Race 9 #1 Too Darn Discreet

Too Darn Discreet is the runner Gator believes offers the best value at Flemington, particularly with the step up to 2000m.

She's been building towards a peak performance throughout her preparation.

First-up, she attacked the line strongly, suggesting she had returned in excellent order.

She then produced another terrific effort second-up despite covering additional ground after racing wide.

Her latest appearance came in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap, where she continued to make ground through the closing stages.

Although she was unable to finish over the top of her rivals, Gator felt she was racing like a mare looking for a longer distance.

She gets that opportunity on Saturday.

The rise to 2000m is a major positive, with Too Darn Discreet boasting a perfect record of three wins from three starts at the distance.

She also drops back from Group 1 opposition into a mares' race, which should provide a more suitable assignment.

The obvious concern is the 60kg she'll be required to carry.

That's a substantial weight, particularly over 2000m, but her excellent distance record and recent performances suggest she's capable of overcoming it.

With the right race setup, Too Darn Discreet should be finishing strongly.
