The Group 1 Flight Stakes over 1600m at Randwick brings together the leading three-year-old fillies, with the Tea Rose Stakes providing the key form reference.

That race produced several performances better than they looked on paper.

Global Goal and Striking Alibi both encountered trouble before charging late, while Bangkok Hottie absorbed a strong early tempo and still had enough left to win.

The step to 1600m changes the equation again, and with a few millimetres of rain potentially having an impact, this shapes as a fascinating edition of the Flight Stakes.

David Gately’s Group 1 Flight Stakes Preview 3/10/26

Track Conditions

Randwick is rated around the Good/Soft range, although there are mixed reports around how much rain will arrive on race day.

If the track receives the forecast 4–5mm, it could have a genuine impact on conditions.

The rail returns to the True position after being out 6m at the most recent meeting.

On that occasion, racing closer to the speed was preferred without the pattern becoming severe, and there weren't many horses making sweeping runs from the back.

The previous True-rail meeting in late August saw runners getting away from the hard inside section.

It's a meeting where the early races will be important in determining the best ground.

Gator’s Flight Stakes Tips

1. #3 Global Goal

Global Goal is the filly I'm leaning towards on top.

She settled well back in the Tea Rose and initially struggled to quicken before being baulked at a crucial stage.

Once she finally found room, her last 100m was outstanding, zooming through the line against what was largely the pattern of the day.

Now she gets to 1600m and the rail returns to the True position.

The mile looks an important ingredient and, with clear running when the race goes on, she gets her chance to turn the tables on those who finished ahead of her in the Tea Rose.

2. #2 Striking Alibi

Striking Alibi arguably should have won the Tea Rose.

She had no luck at a crucial stage before attacking the line strongly closer to the inside and still managed to finish ahead of Global Goal.

That performance makes her very difficult to knock heading to 1600m.

With a cleaner passage this time, Striking Alibi is going to be very hard to beat.

3. #1 Bangkok Hottie

Bangkok Hottie deserves plenty of credit for winning the Tea Rose.

She chased a hot early tempo, with the first 800m run in 46.5 seconds, before breaking clear and holding off the late challengers.

The second and third placegetters came from further back, which adds merit to the winner's performance given the work she did closer to the speed.

There's no reason to doubt her at 1600m, and she again commands plenty of respect.

4. #4 Queen’s Gamble

Queen's Gamble is the filly to forgive from the Tea Rose.

She settled back before being asked to make her move early despite the already strong tempo, leaving her with a difficult task late.

A more patient approach could produce a very different result here.

If she's saved for one run at them over the mile, she's certainly not out of the Flight Stakes.

5. #6 Sumac

Sumac made some ground in the Tea Rose and should appreciate getting out to 1600m.

She needs to improve on the leading chances from that race, but the rise to the mile gives her an opportunity to do exactly that.

Gator’s Top Five

1. GLOBAL GOAL
2. Striking Alibi
3. Bangkok Hottie
4. Queen’s Gamble
5. Sumac

Top Pick: Global Goal

Global Goal's final 100m in the Tea Rose was the key takeaway.

With the step to 1600m and hopefully a cleaner passage, she gets her chance to turn that eye-catching finish into a Group 1 Flight Stakes victory.
