The $10 million Golden Eagle takes centre stage at Randwick on Saturday, with an outstanding field of four-year-olds set to clash over 1500m in one of Australia's richest races.

David Gately has identified seven leading contenders in this year's edition, headed by the outstanding mare Sheza Alibi, who returns to her own age group after competing against some of the country's best middle-distance performers.

However, the sharp drop from 2000m to 1500m presents an interesting challenge for the favourite, particularly against a field containing several talented runners arriving in peak form.

Skyhook and Apocalyptic bring strong Silver Eagle form into the race, while Within The Law could be the forgotten runner at enormous odds after an eye-catching performance in the same lead-up.

Beiwacht, Autumn Boy and Regal Award also have legitimate claims in what shapes as a fascinating contest.

Gator has Sheza Alibi on top, but with several runners capable of improving sharply under Saturday's conditions, there could be plenty of value beyond the favourite.

David Gately’s Golden Eagle Selections & Analysis

1st – #16 Sheza Alibi

Sheza Alibi is the star of this year's Golden Eagle field and deserves her position at the top of the market.

The talented four-year-old mare has already demonstrated her ability against some of Australia's best horses, and her latest performance in the Might And Power Stakes was particularly impressive.

She produced a powerful finishing burst over 2000m, charging past Birdman and Kingswood in the concluding stages.

That form has since been strengthened considerably.

Birdman went on to narrowly miss victory in the Cox Plate, while Kingswood claimed the Caulfield Cup.

The race was also run in record time, adding further merit to Sheza Alibi's performance.

Those form references highlight the quality of opposition she's been competing against, and she now returns to racing against fellow four-year-olds.

On exposed ability, she's clearly one of the strongest horses in the field.

However, there is one significant question heading into Saturday.

Can Sheza Alibi handle the sharp drop from 2000m to 1500m?

It's a considerable change in distance, particularly in a race where several rivals possess genuine sprinting speed.

The concern isn't necessarily whether she's good enough, but whether she'll be able to quicken at the right moment when the pressure goes on.

If she can stay in touch with the leading chances and unleash her trademark finishing burst, she'll be extremely difficult to hold out.

But if the race develops into a sharp sprint, the shorter-distance specialists could make her task considerably harder.

Gator's Verdict: Sheza Alibi has the strongest form in the race after finishing alongside outstanding Group 1 performers in record time. She's the horse to beat, but the drop to 1500m is the major query.

2nd – #2 Skyhook

Skyhook has been racing in outstanding form throughout this preparation and looks ideally placed to produce another strong performance.

His latest effort in the Silver Eagle was particularly encouraging considering the circumstances.

The drop back to 1300m was far from ideal, and he appeared to be under pressure earlier than expected as the race developed.

Despite being unsuited by the shorter distance, Skyhook continued to fight strongly and was narrowly beaten.

That performance suggests he's going extremely well.

The return to 1500m is a major positive, giving him the opportunity to settle into a more comfortable rhythm and sustain his effort over a distance that should suit him better.

There are still a couple of tactical questions.

His barrier draw and whether the inside section of the track is the preferred ground could prove important in determining how the race unfolds for him.

If the fence is disadvantaged, his position in running could become a concern.

However, on recent form and with the additional distance in his favour, Skyhook looks one of the leading winning chances.

Gator's Verdict: Skyhook was excellent in the Silver Eagle despite being unsuited at 1300m. The rise to 1500m is a significant advantage, and he's one of the main dangers to Sheza Alibi.

3rd – #17 Apocalyptic

Apocalyptic is another mare arriving in excellent form and looks capable of playing a major role in the Golden Eagle.

Gator has been particularly impressed with the way she's performed throughout this preparation, especially given the circumstances of her earlier runs.

She was producing strong efforts over distances that didn't necessarily suit, while also being asked to carry substantial weights.

Despite those challenges, she continued to race extremely well.

When finally stepping out to 1300m in the Silver Eagle, she demonstrated exactly what she's capable of.

Apocalyptic produced a powerful finishing performance to run over Skyhook and the other leading contenders.

That victory was an excellent indication of her current form.

The rise to 1500m should suit her even better, allowing her to settle into a comfortable rhythm before building momentum late.

Another important factor is the weights.

Apocalyptic meets Skyhook 1kg better than she did in the Silver Eagle, giving her an additional advantage over a rival she has already defeated.

With her recent improvement, suitable distance and favourable weight comparison, she's a serious winning chance.

Gator's Verdict: Apocalyptic has been racing exceptionally well and was outstanding winning the Silver Eagle. The rise to 1500m and improved weight position against Skyhook make her a major contender.

4th – #18 Within The Law

Within The Law is one of the most interesting runners in this year's Golden Eagle and could represent enormous value at $51.

Her performance in the Silver Eagle was much better than the finishing result might suggest.

She produced a powerful late run along the inside, charging home underneath the other runners.

Importantly, that wasn't the preferred section of the track.

Despite racing away from the better ground, Within The Law continued to make significant ground over the concluding stages.

She was also well in front of several rivals shortly after the winning post, suggesting she had plenty more to offer once she found her momentum.

That performance indicates the rise to 1500m could be ideal.

However, there is an important form reference that needs to be considered.

Skyhook clearly had her measure during their previous preparation in Queensland on a Heavy track.

That result suggests she still has something to find against one of the leading contenders.

But the circumstances on Saturday could be different, and her latest performance indicates she's capable of producing a much stronger result than the market expects.

At $51, Gator believes she's well worth including in the wider calculations.

Gator's Verdict: Within The Law was outstanding late in the Silver Eagle despite racing away from the preferred ground. At $51, she's a fascinating roughie who could significantly outperform her odds.

5th – #1 Beiwacht

Beiwacht produced a courageous performance in the Silver Eagle and deserves consideration heading into Saturday's feature.

He gave his supporters an excellent sight after racing prominently, only being caught in the concluding stages.

It was a strong effort, particularly considering the weight he was carrying.

Beiwacht had 58.5kg in the Silver Eagle, and the move to set-weight conditions means he meets his rivals more favourably at the weights in the Golden Eagle.

That's an important factor when assessing his chances of reversing the result.

His natural early speed should allow him to take up a prominent position and give himself every opportunity to compete.

However, the track pattern could be crucial.

Beiwacht would benefit considerably if the surface favours runners racing close to the speed.

Gator believes a strong leader bias is unlikely, which creates some uncertainty around his winning chances.

If the track plays fairly and he can control the tempo without absorbing too much pressure, he's capable of giving another excellent account of himself.

Gator's Verdict: Beiwacht was brave in the Silver Eagle and meets his rivals better at the weights. An on-speed track pattern would strengthen his claims, although that may not eventuate.

6th – #3 Autumn Boy

Autumn Boy is a talented runner who has spent much of his career chasing Sheza Alibi without managing to get the better of her.

However, Saturday presents a slightly different challenge for both horses.

Sheza Alibi returns sharply in distance from 2000m, and that change could provide Autumn Boy with an opportunity to close the gap.

His latest performance in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap is worth forgiving.

Autumn Boy was held up at a crucial stage and found himself racing through the worst section of the track.

Those circumstances made it difficult for him to produce his best finishing effort.

With a more favourable run on Saturday, he could improve considerably.

He has the ability to be competitive at this level, and the race setup may allow him to challenge some of the more fancied runners.

The key question is whether he can finally turn the tables on Sheza Alibi.

Gator's Verdict: Autumn Boy has consistently found Sheza Alibi too strong, but the favourite's drop in distance creates an interesting opportunity. Forgive his unlucky Epsom Handicap performance.

7th – #4 Regal Award

Regal Award is an intriguing runner who could be capable of producing a much stronger performance than his recent form suggests.

He made an excellent return to racing earlier this preparation, defeating a runner who subsequently won the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.

That form is clearly strong enough to be competitive in the Golden Eagle.

However, his latest performance was disappointing, with Regal Award fading after appearing to have his opportunity.

The challenge is determining whether that run was simply below his best or an indication that he's struggling to reproduce his earlier form.

There is an important reference from his previous preparation in Queensland.

Regal Award defeated Skyhook despite covering additional ground throughout the race after being caught three wide.

That was an outstanding effort and demonstrates the level of ability he possesses when racing at his best.

Given Skyhook is one of the leading contenders in this year's Golden Eagle, that form line deserves considerable respect.

If Regal Award can reproduce his earlier performances, he's capable of surprising at longer odds.

Gator's Verdict: Regal Award has strong form through Skyhook and a subsequent Toorak Handicap winner. His latest run was disappointing, but he could be the best blowout chance if he returns to his best.

7th #4 Regal Award Strong previous form; potential blowout chance

Golden Eagle Final Verdict

The 2026 Golden Eagle shapes as a fascinating contest, with several talented four-year-olds bringing outstanding form into the $10 million feature.

Sheza Alibi clearly has the strongest exposed form after her excellent performance in the Might And Power Stakes, where she finished ahead of subsequent Group 1 performers Birdman and Kingswood.

Returning to her own age group is a significant advantage, although the sharp drop from 2000m to 1500m remains a legitimate concern.

Skyhook looks particularly well placed rising in distance after his excellent Silver Eagle performance, while Apocalyptic has strong claims after defeating him in that race and meeting him better at the weights.

Within The Law is the runner who could surprise at enormous odds.

Her powerful late finish against the track pattern in the Silver Eagle suggests she has more to offer, and $51 looks a generous price for a mare capable of producing a strong finishing effort.

Beiwacht, Autumn Boy and Regal Award also deserve consideration, particularly if circumstances fall in their favour.

However, Gator is sticking with the class runner.
