David Gately locks in on the two headline races on the Gold Coast Magic Millions program, with a clear top pick in both the 2YO Classic and 3YO Guineas.

With a Soft track expected but hopefully improving conditions through the day, race shape and proven class at the trip look pivotal.

Magic Millions Day Preview – David Gately’s 2YO & 3YO Features

Track & Conditions – Gold Coast

  • Track: Soft

  • Rail: +2m Entire

  • Weather: Possible thunderstorms, but rainfall not expected to be significant

  • Pattern Notes: When the rail was True last week the track played evenly early, with runners edging away from the inside lanes later in the day. Expect similar if the surface improves.

Race 7 – TAB 2YO Magic Millions Classic (SW) – 1200m

A deep juvenile contest, but the favourite looks to have separated himself from the pack through both performance and times.

Top Pick – No.4 Warwoven

An outstanding debut winner who stamped himself as top class immediately.

He ran sizzling time in disposing of Shiki, who franked that form with a brilliant win here last week.

Stepped to 1200m at Eagle Farm and was far too strong again, accounting for several key rivals he meets here.

On exposed form and clock, he’s the clear standout.

Main Dangers

  • No.2 TORNADO VALLEY – Strong Flemington win followed by a wide but solid Eagle Farm run. Blinkers go on and he draws favourably, which could sharpen him further.

  • No.1 ZIP LOCK – Two from two and did pull away from Tornado Valley late last start. Has upside and deserves respect.

  • No.6 KNIGHTSBRIDGE – Had the fitness edge first-up and beat a couple of handy types with authority. The closing 600m was high quality. Best roughie in the race.

  • No.5 UNIT FIVE – Dominant on debut after absorbing pressure, though the bias and overall time make him a tricky read. Still has talent and warrants inclusion.

Gately’s 2YO Order: 4 – 2 – 1 – 6 – 5

Race 8 – Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (SWP) – 1400m

The Guineas brings together multiple form lines, but one runner looks to have taken a significant leap forward.

Top Pick – No.1 NINJA

Returned from a spell looking ready to explode.

He arguably tested Grafterburners fresh, then completely demolished them at Eagle Farm, swooping from near the tail and winning with authority.

The wide draw is the only query, but if the fence improves or he finds cover, he simply looks better than these.

Clear top pick.

Main Dangers

  • No.10 MEMO – Closed off well fresh and has strong reference form from last prep, including being beaten by a high-class type at Moonee Valley and finishing within five lengths of Tempted.

  • No.11 ICARIAN DREAM – Strong through the line at Eagle Farm behind Grafterburners, and that form ties in neatly. Had a gap between runs and can improve again.

  • No.4 TORQUE TO BE SURE – Luckless two starts back behind Grafterburners, then charged home back to 1100m last time. Big odds appeal if things go his way.

  • No.6 SPANISH TREASURE – Sound against some of these at Eagle Farm, then dropped in grade and proved too strong. That was his first attempt at 1400m and he handled it well.

Gately’s 3YO Order: 1 – 10 – 11 – 4 – 6

Final Word

Warwoven profiles as the standout juvenile on the card, while Ninja looks to have found another gear at three and shapes as the horse to beat in the Guineas.

Both selections look ideally suited to conditions.
