David Gately heads to Randwick with three selections across Saturday's card, headed by an impressive last-start winner who looks even better suited stepping to the mile.
Randwick is expected to race on a Good track with the rail out 6m, moving from the 3m position used at the most recent meeting.
The track played fairly that day despite runners moving away from the hard inside, while the previous meeting with the rail at 6m strongly favoured those on speed.
The early races will again be worth monitoring before making any firm assumptions about the pattern.
David Gately’s Sydney Best Bets – Randwick Saturday 19/9/26
Bet of the Day – Race 2 #2 Barrengarry
Barrengarry's return was excellent.
He found himself back and wide but was still able to round up his opposition with an impressive turn of foot and win convincingly.
There is good reason to expect him to improve again. He produced a dominant maiden victory second-up last preparation and now gets to 1600m, which looks even more suitable.
The rise to 60.5kg is the obvious challenge, but the way he returned suggests he's capable of overcoming it.
Barrengarry is the clear top pick.
Best Each-Way – Race 7 #3 Striking Alibi
Striking Alibi couldn't produce her best acceleration first-up over 1200m after the race developed off only a moderate tempo.
The most encouraging part came late.
She was really warming into her work through the final 100m, suggesting the run brought her on and that she was looking for further.
She now gets exactly that with the rise to 1400m, while James McDonald should be able to have her settling a little closer this time.
With the extra trip and a more suitable position in running, Striking Alibi looks ready to improve sharply second-up.
