Randwick raced fairly last Saturday with the rail at 3m, although runners generally benefited from moving away from the inside rail when making their runs.

The last meeting with the rail positioned 6m saw on-pace runners enjoy a particularly successful afternoon, with relatively few horses managing to swoop from the rear.

That historical pattern is worth keeping in mind when assessing Saturday's selections, particularly if the track again favours runners settling closer to the speed.

 

Bet of the Day – Randwick Race 8 #1 Lazzura

Lazzura looks ideally placed to continue her strong preparation, with David Gately identifying the talented mare as his standout selection at Randwick.

She returned from a spell with an encouraging performance, finishing close behind the winner in a race run in slick time despite carrying a substantial weight.

That effort suggested she had returned in excellent order, and she confirmed it at her next appearance.

Stepping up to 1400m in the Group 2 Gold Pendant, Lazzura produced an impressive victory against quality opposition.

The form from that race has since received another significant boost, with fourth-placed Surfin' Bird travelling to Caulfield and winning impressively.

Importantly, Lazzura now meets the second and third placegetters from the Gold Pendant on more favourable weight terms.

That gives her an excellent opportunity to confirm her superiority over those rivals.

Gator also believes she's particularly well suited in this grade of mares' racing, where her class and recent performances give her a clear advantage.

With strong form, favourable weight conditions and proven ability against this opposition, Lazzura looks exceptionally well placed.

Best Roughie of the Day – Randwick Race 9 #8 Brave One

Brave One is the runner David Gately believes can deliver a surprise at a big price on Saturday.

His recent performances have been considerably better than they might appear on paper, particularly when taking into account the circumstances of his races.

First-up, Brave One was given virtually no opportunity to make an impact due to the race tempo, which worked against his chances of getting into the contest.

He then stepped up sharply from 1100m to 1400m for his second-up assignment in the Alan Brown Stakes.

Despite covering significant extra ground after being caught very wide, Brave One continued to finish strongly.

It was an excellent effort under the circumstances, and Gator was particularly impressed by his determination to keep finding the line.

With those two runs behind him, Brave One has the opportunity to produce another improved performance.

He's certainly not a guaranteed winner, but his recent efforts suggest he's capable of being competitive at a much bigger price than the market might indicate.

At around $21, Brave One is Gator's Best Roughie of the Day at Randwick.
