David Gately has two selections at Randwick this Saturday, including a talented mare who boasts a perfect second-up record and gets a significant drop in grade.
Randwick is expected to race on a Good track with the rail out 3m.
When the rail was last in this position in June, runners moved away from the hard inside and all 10 winners were positioned inside the first four at the 600m, making the early pattern particularly important to monitor.
Gately's roughie also comes off an encouraging performance and looks much better suited when racing on top of the ground.
David Gately’s Sydney Best Bets – Randwick Saturday 5/9/26
Bet of the Day – Race 7 #7 Idle Flyer
Idle Flyer produced an excellent return against A-grade weight-for-age opposition and now finds a much more suitable assignment.
She's always been a mare who improves significantly with a run under her belt, and her second-up record couldn't be stronger.
Four second-up starts for four wins.
She now drops back a notch in grade with the benefit of that first-up run and looks ideally placed to maintain that unbeaten second-up record.
Idle Flyer is the clear top pick.
Best Roughie – Race 3 #5 Tequila Bay
Tequila Bay produced a good performance last start despite covering ground over 1100m.
Importantly, that run came back on a drier surface, which looks to be a key factor with this horse. There was also a month between runs, giving further merit to the effort.
Randwick is expected to provide another Good surface on Saturday and Tequila Bay gets conditions that should allow her to produce her best.
At around $21, Tequila Bay is well worth including at a big price.
