The Group 1 Randwick Guineas shapes as one of the highlights of the Sydney autumn carnival, bringing together a deep field of three-year-olds stepping up to the mile at weight-for-age conditions.

Randwick is expected to race on a Good to Soft surface with rain forecast across Friday and Saturday, though totals currently look light.

The rail moves out 5 metres from the 1000m to the winning post and 3 metres for the remainder after being True last week, when the inside lanes were largely avoided.

Historically, when the rail has been positioned around the 4–6 metre range, on-pace runners have enjoyed strong advantages, which could again prove significant depending on how the track plays on the day.

Light winds are forecast, so conditions should be relatively fair if the surface holds together.

This year’s Randwick Guineas brings together several proven Group performers, many of whom clashed in the Hobartville Stakes, setting up a fascinating rematch over the 1600m.

David Gately – Group 1 Randwick Guineas Preview 5/3/26

The Leading Chances

Autumn Boy

The Caulfield Guineas winner produced an outstanding return when charging home wide on a day at Rosehill where the inside lanes were clearly advantaged.

Despite working against the bias he attacked the line strongly, suggesting he has returned in excellent order.

Importantly, he draws a better gate here and returns to the mile, a distance he has already proven himself at when winning the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas.

With a more economical run expected, he profiles as one of the major contenders.

Sheza Alibi

A brilliant fresh winner against the fillies where she produced some of the best closing sectionals of the meeting. Her performance was backed up by strong overall time figures, highlighting the quality of the victory.

Her lone run at 1600 metres resulted in a dominant Sandown Guineas win against the males, and she also finished only 1.9 lengths behind Autumn Boy when racing three-wide in June last year. If she produces a similar performance here she is clearly a major threat.

Ninja

A very genuine galloper who showed his quality when absorbing pressure before winning the Hobartville Stakes. That performance came against several of the key rivals he meets again here.

He has continued to progress each preparation and there is no clear reason to doubt his ability to run a strong mile. If he secures a favourable run in transit, he looks capable of being right in the finish again.

Attica

Produced an eye-catching performance in the Hobartville, finishing strongly along the inside and suggesting the rise to 1600 metres will be right up his alley.

His closing splits were particularly strong, with his final 200 metres actually quicker than Autumn Boy in that race. With the extra distance expected to suit, he shapes as a serious late threat.

Decorum

Arrives in good form after two wins this preparation and continues to improve.

His form ties in closely with Attica, having finished within 0.6 lengths of him in a 1400 metre race earlier in their careers.

While he still needs to take another step at Group 1 level, his current trajectory suggests he is capable of measuring up if he continues to progress.
