David Gately heads to Sandown Hillside expecting the track to improve into the weekend after only limited rain through the latter part of the week.

With the rail back in the True position for the first time since March, there should be plenty of fresh ground available and Gately expects runners getting away from the inside lanes late to still hold an advantage.

The Volta looks ready to break through.

His first-up performance was excellent where he comfortably accounted for Milos Filos, before a much tougher second-up assignment where Gately felt he was ridden too aggressively through the middle stages.

Despite that, the effort still had plenty of merit and his closing sectionals compared favourably to talented filly Concord Connie last week, which reads strongly for this level.

Now fitter third-up and getting into a more suitable setup, he profiles as a horse ready to peak.

Sandown Race 5 – #8 Blethyn

Blethyn appeals as one of the better value runners on the card.

Since being gelded, he has won three of his past four starts and the only defeat in that stretch came when trapped wide throughout over 1050m.

The wide draw here may actually work in his favour given the nature of Hillside sprint races and his current form suggests he is racing with real confidence.

At the early double-figure odds, Gately believes he is significantly overlooked by the market.
