Day 2 of The Championships at Randwick Racecourse brings one of the great staying tests on the Australian calendar, the Group 1 Sydney Cup over 3200m.

With the rail in the True position and conditions likely in the Good to Soft range, the race shapes as a genuine staying contest where tempo, toughness and proven stamina at the trip will be decisive.

These two-mile races are rarely about brilliance.

Instead, they reward horses that can sustain a long run, handle pressure and stay every yard of the journey.

This year’s edition brings together a deep mix of local stayers, emerging types and proven performers over distance, with several key form lines tying through recent staying features and spring campaigns.

David Gately – Sydney Cup Preview 2026

The Top Pick

LITZDEEL (No.14)

He profiles as the value runner in the race.

Second-up he charged home against a strong pattern that favoured those on speed, then stepped to 2600m where he simply could not reel in Whiskey On The Hill, who had a much softer run in transit.

Importantly, his effort there was arguably better than it reads, and his previous clash with Mr Monaco in the spring suggests he measures right up to this level.

Dropping to 51kg is a major advantage in a race like this, and with a genuinely run 3200m expected, he looks ideally suited.

At around $16, he appeals as a strong each-way play.

The Main Danger

MR MONACO (No.11)

Comes through the Manion Cup where he covered ground and still proved too strong, beating a number of these who also contested the Chairman’s.

He holds a form edge over Litzdeel from their spring clash at 2000m and looks to be peaking at the right time this preparation.

The step to 3200m looks no issue, and if he can overcome the barrier, he is clearly one of the hardest to beat.

The Proven Stayer

SOUL OF SPAIN (No.4)

His run in the Group 1 Tancred Stakes was full of merit, holding his ground in a race run at a tempo that did not suit.

Prior to that, his performance in the Sky High Stakes showed his ability to sustain a long run, and his international form includes a win over 3319m.

His spring campaign ties in strongly with this field through races like the Metropolitan and St Leger, where he matched motors with key rivals.

He profiles as one of the strongest genuine stayers in the race.

The Key Chances

PARADISE STORM (No.7)

Dominant winner of the Auckland Cup over 3200m, proving his credentials at the trip.

Back in distance in the Roy Higgins, he was unsuited by the slow tempo but still worked home strongly behind Litzdeel and Whiskey On The Hill.

Back to 3200m is ideal.

CAMPALDINO (No.2)

Carried 59kg last start and still performed well. His Brisbane Cup win over 3200m is a key reference, where he defeated Etna Rosso, tying him into multiple form lines here.

Proven at the distance and must be respected.

WHISKEY ON THE HILL (No.5)

Had the right run last start but was strong late to hold off Litzdeel.

Also beat Etna Rosso earlier in the preparation, reinforcing the strength of his form.

If he gets a similar run in transit, he can again be competitive.

Summary

This Sydney Cup sets up as a true staying contest where weight, race shape and proven stamina will be crucial.

Litzdeel looks the value runner dropping sharply in weight and stepping to his ideal trip, while Mr Monaco brings the strongest recent form and profiles as the main danger.

Soul Of Spain adds genuine staying quality, and with several others proven at the distance, this shapes as a deep and competitive renewal where those strongest late over the final 400m will dominate the finish.
