The Group 1 Galaxy Handicap shapes as a high-pressure sprint where fitness, positioning and weight all come sharply into play, and with a compressed handicap field, there looks to be genuine depth across the race.

In Sydney, racing returns to Rosehill, where conditions are expected to be in the Soft range.

There is light rain forecast for Friday, followed by a 40% chance of showers on Saturday (2.5mm–10mm), with light winds predicted.

The rail is out 2 metres, after being in the True position last week, where the track played very well.

If rain arrives as expected, Gately suspects runners may begin to edge away from the inside rail as the meeting progresses, which could play a role in how this race unfolds, particularly over the short 1100m trip.

David Gately – G1 Galaxy Preview 21/3/26

#1 BRIASA

Resumes here and brings high-quality form into the race.

He produced a strong first-up second to Joliestar in the Shorts last preparation carrying 58kg, and notably was huge against the pattern in this race last year.

His recent trials have been outstanding, suggesting he is ready to fire fresh.

While 58.5kg is no gift, he looks well treated relative to the weights and has to be a leading contender.

#14 GRAFTERBURNERS

An exciting three-year-old resuming, coming off four consecutive wins.

The Ninja form reads very well, and his recent trial in Queensland was solid under a hold, indicating he has returned in good order.

With a 5.5kg weight pull below weight-for-age, he profiles as a major danger.

#4 HEDGED

Was beaten in fast time carrying 59kg in the Oakleigh Plate, and arguably was a good thing beaten the start prior.

He had previously broken a track record, and his current form suggests he is flying.

With the drop to 55kg, he is very much in the mix.

#17 INKARUNA

Needs to gain a start, but if she does, she is a genuine winning chance.

#5 RESERVE BANK

Resumes here and was seen chasing Briasa in a recent trial.

His Oakleigh Plate run (third behind Gallant Son) provides a solid reference for this level, and on that form you can make a case for him.

#9 OSTRAKA

Resumes and is a runner who can perform well fresh.

He was close-up in the Concorde Stakes first-up last prep behind Headwall, which ties in neatly with Briasa’s form.

With just 52kg, he profiles as the best roughie in the race.

Gately’s Galaxy Summary

This year’s Galaxy Handicap looks a race with multiple winning chances, where weight differentials and race shape will be key.

  • Briasa brings proven Group 1-level form and looks ready to fire fresh

  • Grafterburners has the upside and weight advantage as a progressive three-year-old

  • Hedged is racing in top form and well weighted

  • Ostraka appeals as the knockout chance at the weights

With expected pressure and potential deterioration of the inside lanes, this shapes as a race where the winner will likely be the runner that can balance early, handle the conditions, and produce late under handicap pressure.
