The Group 1 Thousand Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield brings together an exciting group of three-year-old fillies, with several progressive runners looking to announce themselves at the highest level.
This year's edition features a fascinating clash between Regal Ambition, Over The Bridge and Pretty Baby, with their recent form offering important clues.
Regal Ambition heads into the race after an outstanding Caulfield win over Pretty Baby, while the unbeaten Over The Bridge faces her biggest test after making a terrific impression in just two career starts.
Throw in the dominant last-start winner Saintly Dancer, Sydney Group 1 performer De Armas and the promising Platinum Pearl, and there's plenty of depth to this year's contest.
Regal Ambition is my Best Each-Way Bet of the Day, with her latest performance suggesting she's ready to take another significant step forward.
Track Conditions – Caulfield Cup Day
Caulfield is expected to race on a Good track, with the rail moving out to the 3m position and light winds forecast.
The recent track patterns provide some useful information heading into Saturday.
With the rail out 13m on Wednesday, on-speed runners dominated the early races before horses began moving away from the inside fence as the meeting progressed.
The previous Saturday's meeting was conducted with the rail in the True position, when runners settling close to the speed held a significant advantage in races around the circuit.
The sprint races from the chute produced a different pattern, with two winners charging home from behind and another leading throughout.
For the Thousand Guineas, which is run around the circuit, early positioning could prove particularly important.
The first few races should provide a clearer indication of whether runners can make ground from the rear or whether those settling close to the speed retain an advantage.
The Thousand Guineas – Race Shape
The tactical battle looks especially interesting given the different racing styles of the leading contenders.
Saintly Dancer has demonstrated her ability to race prominently, having led throughout for a dominant victory over 1600m in the Edward Manifold Stakes.
Over The Bridge also has the tactical speed to take up a forward position, although her wide barrier creates an early challenge.
Regal Ambition produced her latest victory after settling back and making a sustained run around the field before the home turn.
That performance highlighted her ability to build momentum and finish strongly, but she'll need to be within striking distance if the track continues to favour on-speed runners.
Pretty Baby has already demonstrated her class against strong opposition, while De Armas, Platinum Pearl and Icelady all bring form that makes them difficult to dismiss.
The key will be whether Saintly Dancer is allowed to dictate terms or whether the pressure increases early enough to bring the stronger finishers into the contest.
With several lightly raced fillies stepping up to the mile, race positioning and the ability to sustain a finishing effort could ultimately decide the result.

David Gately’s Group 1 Thousand Guineas Preview 2026
1. #9 Regal Ambition – Best Each-Way Bet of the Day
Regal Ambition is my top selection and Best Each-Way Bet of the Day in the Thousand Guineas.
This progressive filly has made an outstanding impression in just three career starts, and her latest victory at Caulfield was particularly impressive.
After producing a very good maiden win, she stepped up to 1440m and faced a considerably stronger assignment.
She settled towards the rear before being taken wide approaching the home turn, covering additional ground as she began to build momentum.
Despite that difficult passage, Regal Ambition finished powerfully to run down Pretty Baby, who had been racing in terrific form.
Importantly, the pair established a decisive margin over the third placegetter, giving the performance additional merit.
What stands out is that Regal Ambition achieved all this at just her third career start.
She's still learning her craft, and the progression from her maiden victory to that latest performance suggests there's considerably more improvement ahead.
The rise to 1600m looks a natural progression, particularly given the strength of her finish at 1440m.
The main consideration is the race pattern. If Caulfield again favours horses settling close to the speed, she'll need to avoid giving her rivals too much of a start.
But her ability to sustain a strong run and overcome a difficult passage last time gives plenty of confidence that she can measure up at Group 1 level.
Regal Ambition is the filly to beat and looks a terrific each-way betting opportunity.
2. #8 Over The Bridge
Over The Bridge is an unbeaten filly with enormous potential, and her first two performances suggest she belongs in Group 1 company.
She made an immediate impression on debut, producing a performance that rated strongly against the clock.
That early promise was confirmed at her next appearance when she overcame a difficult run at Caulfield.
Racing wide and close to the speed, she was forced to work throughout but still proved too strong for her opposition.
The form from that victory is particularly interesting.
She defeated Ghana's Akan by a similar margin to Pretty Baby, providing a useful comparison with one of the established Thousand Guineas contenders.
That gives Over The Bridge a genuine form reference despite having only two starts.
There are, however, two significant challenges.
Firstly, she has drawn a wide barrier, which could force her to work early to secure a suitable position.
Secondly, she's being asked to tackle 1600m at just her third career start, a considerable test for such an inexperienced filly.
But there's no questioning her ability.
Over The Bridge looks a very smart prospect and is the main danger to Regal Ambition.
3. #2 Pretty Baby
Pretty Baby has been one of the more consistent fillies heading towards the Thousand Guineas and brings strong form into this assignment.
She was particularly impressive winning the Atlantic Jewel Stakes, where she made light work of her opposition on a wet track.
Her latest performance behind Regal Ambition was also full of merit.
Although she was unable to match the winner's finishing burst, Pretty Baby was carrying the full penalty and still produced a solid performance.
The rise to 1600m looks within her capabilities, and she's already demonstrated that she can compete against some of the leading contenders.
The main concern is the expected track condition.
Pretty Baby has shown a clear liking for rain-affected ground, and additional rain would strengthen her prospects considerably.
On a Good surface, she may not enjoy quite the same advantage.
Nevertheless, her established form makes her one of the leading chances.
Pretty Baby is a genuine Group 1 contender, particularly if the track receives more rain than expected.
4. #3 Saintly Dancer
Saintly Dancer arrives after one of the most dominant lead-up performances of any runner in the field.
Stepping to 1600m for the first time in the Edward Manifold Stakes, she took control from the front before racing away to win by an extraordinary six lengths.
It was an emphatic victory, although the extremely wet conditions were an important factor.
She now faces a very different challenge on what is expected to be a Good track.
There is, however, more to her form than that latest performance.
Back in August, Saintly Dancer defeated Platinum Pearl, who subsequently finished within 2.5 lengths of Regal Ambition despite having limited luck.
That gives Saintly Dancer another important form reference against the leading Thousand Guineas contenders.
Her tactical speed is also a major advantage.
If she can find the front without being pressured and Caulfield continues to favour on-speed runners, she'll take plenty of catching.
The question is whether she can reproduce her dominant wet-track performance on a firmer surface against stronger opposition.
Saintly Dancer has genuine winning claims and could prove difficult to run down.
5. #4 De Armas
De Armas brings valuable Group 1 experience into the Thousand Guineas after an excellent performance in Sydney.
She made a significant jump from 1200m to 1600m in the Group 1 Flight Stakes and handled the challenge extremely well.
Despite the sharp rise in distance, she finished between two talented fillies, providing a strong indication that she can compete at this level.
That performance deserves plenty of credit given the difficulty of the assignment.
There is a question surrounding the Sydney form after Cherry Bombshell failed to measure up in the Caulfield race won by Regal Ambition.
However, there were other excuses for that performance, so it's difficult to use that result as a definitive assessment of the Sydney form.
De Armas has already demonstrated that she can run a strong mile against quality opposition.
That gives her an advantage over some of the less experienced runners still being tested at the distance.
De Armas is a legitimate contender and shouldn't be underestimated.
6. #13 Platinum Pearl
Platinum Pearl is one of the more interesting runners at bigger odds.
The Frankel filly has shown plenty of promise in just three career starts and appears well suited by the rise to 1600m.
Her latest performance was better than the result suggests.
She encountered traffic problems at a crucial stage, preventing her from building momentum when the race was being decided.
That makes her finishing position somewhat misleading.
Her earlier form also ties in well with several of the leading contenders.
She finished behind Saintly Dancer in August before subsequently getting within 2.5 lengths of Regal Ambition, despite not enjoying the clearest passage.
Those performances suggest she has the ability to be competitive with this opposition.
The rise to the mile should also suit her pedigree and racing style.
With only three starts behind her, there is plenty of scope for further improvement.
Platinum Pearl is a promising filly capable of running a much better race than her recent result suggests.
7. #5 Icelady
Icelady is another filly whose form demands respect.
Her latest performance was particularly significant, defeating Saintly Dancer when stepping to 1400m for the first time.
Saintly Dancer subsequently came out and demolished her opposition by six lengths in the Edward Manifold Stakes, giving that form an obvious boost.
On that reference alone, Icelady deserves consideration.
The question is whether she gets the same opportunity to produce her best against a deeper field.
There appears to be more pressure on paper in this year's Thousand Guineas, and the rise to Group 1 company presents another challenge.
Still, she's already demonstrated that she can defeat a runner considered a genuine winning chance here.
Icelady has a case on the form and cannot be dismissed entirely.

Gator’s Thousand Guineas Verdict
The Thousand Guineas brings together several talented fillies with considerable improvement still to come, making it one of the more intriguing Group 1 races on Caulfield Cup Day.
Over The Bridge has made an outstanding start to her career and looks capable of measuring up despite the wide barrier and rapid rise to 1600m.
Pretty Baby brings strong established form and would become an even greater threat if rain arrived, while Saintly Dancer has the tactical speed to control proceedings after her dominant Edward Manifold victory.
De Armas has already performed well at Group 1 level over the mile, and Platinum Pearl is another progressive filly with the ability to improve sharply.
But Regal Ambition is the standout selection and my Best Each-Way Bet of the Day.
Her latest Caulfield victory was outstanding, overcoming a wide run to defeat the highly regarded Pretty Baby before putting a clear margin on the rest.
That performance came at just her third career start, and the rise to 1600m looks ideal.
She has the talent, recent form and upside to take another significant step forward.
