The Group 1 Toorak Handicap over 1600m at Caulfield shapes as one of the most intriguing betting races of the spring, with a deep field of proven Group 1 performers and progressive gallopers chasing a breakthrough at the highest level.

The recent Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes provides a crucial form reference, with several runners coming through that race after enduring difficult runs or racing away from the better ground.

Regal Award looks the likely leader and brings outstanding form into the race, while Von Hawke, Lady Shenandoah and Too Darn Discreet all have strong claims at potentially attractive prices.

With the rail returning to the True position and the possibility of an on-speed advantage, the race could be decided by which runners secure the right positions before the pressure goes on.

David Gately’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap Preview – Caulfield 10/10/26

Track Conditions

Caulfield is expected to race on a Good track, with warm weather on Friday and only a slight chance of light rain on Saturday.

The rail returns to the True position after being out 13m at the previous meeting, when the track played fairly. On-speed runners were competitive, although Regal Ambition and Jimmysstar both demonstrated that horses could make ground from the rear.

The previous True-rail meeting was conducted on a Soft 7 to Soft 6 surface and strongly favoured runners close to the speed, with six of the nine winners within 2.2 lengths of the lead approaching the home turn.

That doesn't guarantee the same pattern on Saturday, but it's an important consideration, particularly with Regal Award looking capable of controlling the race from the front.

Speed Map & Race Shape

The lack of obvious early speed is one of the most significant factors in this year's Toorak.

Regal Award looks the likely leader, having demonstrated his ability to roll forward and sustain a strong tempo in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

He ran the opening 800m of that race in a sharp 47.1 seconds and continued fighting strongly despite the first two finishers making their runs wider on the superior ground.

If he's allowed to dictate terms more comfortably over the mile, he could become extremely difficult to run down.

The other major consideration is the positioning of runners such as Lady Shenandoah, Von Hawke and Evaporate, who all bring strong form into the contest.

Warnie draws barrier one, which could prove a major advantage if the inside lanes are holding up.

The pressure through the middle stages will be crucial. If Regal Award gets away with comfortable sectionals, those settling further back may find themselves chasing a leader with plenty left to offer.

Gator’s Toorak Handicap Rankings

1. #6 Regal Award

Regal Award is the horse to beat.

His preparation for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes was outstanding, highlighted by a terrific trial before returning at Group 1 level.

He took up the running and established a strong tempo, covering the first 800m in 47.1 seconds, before continuing to fight all the way to the line.

The key takeaway was that the quinella came wider on the track, where the ground was superior, while Regal Award continued battling closer to the inside.

It was an excellent performance under the circumstances.

He now steps to 1600m, a distance at which both previous attempts have produced very good performances.

Importantly, he looks the only natural leader in the race.

If he finds the front without being pressured and the inside ground holds up, Regal Award gets an outstanding opportunity to control proceedings.

He's the clear top selection.

2. #5 Von Hawke

Von Hawke continues to fly under the radar and looks one of the more interesting runners in the Toorak.

He settled around three lengths behind Angel Capital in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and finished approximately three lengths from the winner.

That performance was better than it might initially appear, particularly considering the quality of the opposition.

His second-up record is excellent, and the step to 1600m looks a significant positive.

For mine, the mile is his best distance.

He's again been overlooked in early betting, and Von Hawke looks capable of running a much bigger race than his price suggests.

3. #2 Lady Shenandoah

Lady Shenandoah was another runner whose Sir Rupert Clarke performance deserves plenty of credit.

She finished just behind Regal Award in the battle for third and, like him, wasn't racing on the preferred section of the track.

That makes her effort particularly encouraging heading into the Toorak.

Her previous attempt at 1600m also provides a strong form reference, having split Idle Flyer and Treasurethe Moment.

The major concern is the weight.

Carrying 58kg in a competitive Group 1 handicap makes her task considerably tougher, particularly against several talented runners receiving a significant advantage.

But there's no doubting her class.

Lady Shenandoah can certainly win despite the weight.

4. #11 Too Darn Discreet

Too Darn Discreet is one of the more appealing value runners in the field.

She produced an excellent finishing burst when resuming before enduring a difficult run last start.

Caught wide and forced to work throughout, she still managed to loom as the winner despite having every excuse to weaken.

That performance was full of merit.

She now gets another opportunity to tackle Changing Colours, and the difference in their respective prices is difficult to ignore.

Too Darn Discreet is around four times the price, despite having a genuine case to turn the tables.

With a more economical run, she's capable of producing a significantly better result.

A serious value chance.

5. #1 Evaporate

Evaporate has the ability to win a race of this quality, provided he returns to his best.

His first-up performance was excellent after covering ground and doing plenty of work, before he produced a strong victory second-up.

He then disappointed in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, but there was a legitimate excuse, with lameness reported following the race.

That performance is best forgiven.

He also has an important piece of course-and-distance form, having gone extremely close in last year's Toorak Handicap despite carrying 58kg.

He was narrowly beaten on that occasion and was unlucky not to win.

If he's fully recovered from the issue that affected him last start, Evaporate is capable of bouncing back sharply.

6. #8 Sabaj

Sabaj has several reasons to improve on his recent performances.

He resumed with a good effort at weight-for-age level before failing to find his rhythm in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

That latest run is worth forgiving.

His autumn form is particularly interesting, having been involved in a close finish with Evaporate and Tom Kitten.

That form has since received another boost, with Tom Kitten producing an excellent performance in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap.

Sabaj now enjoys a favourable weight swing against Evaporate from their autumn meeting.

With a return to his best form, he's capable of being much more competitive than his recent result suggests.

7. #13 Changing Colours

Changing Colours is absolutely flying.

She's continued to improve throughout her preparation and now gets the opportunity to test herself at Group 1 level.

This represents another significant rise in class, but her recent performances have been impressive and the form ties in with several runners in this field.

Importantly, she also gets in light at the weights, which gives her an opportunity to measure up against more established opposition.

The question is whether she can continue improving quickly enough to overcome the class rise.

On current form, Changing Colours deserves her chance and must be respected.

8. #3 Warnie

Warnie is another runner capable of figuring prominently, particularly if the track pattern develops in his favour.

He draws barrier one, which could prove extremely valuable if the inside lanes are the preferred ground.

That makes the early races especially important when assessing his chances.

If the inside is holding up and he can take advantage of the draw, Warnie becomes a much more significant winning threat.

A genuine chance with the right track pattern.

Gator’s Verdict

Top Pick: Regal Award

Regal Award brings one of the strongest performances out of the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and looks ideally suited stepping to 1600m.

His ability to control the speed is a major advantage in a race lacking obvious leaders, particularly with the rail returning to the True position.

Von Hawke is the underrated danger, with his excellent second-up record and preference for the mile making him an attractive alternative at bigger odds.

Lady Shenandoah has the class to win despite carrying 58kg, while Too Darn Discreet appeals as a value runner capable of reversing the form with Changing Colours.

The key will be the early track pattern, but with a favourable tempo and an economical run in front, Regal Award gets his chance to claim the Group 1 Toorak Handicap.
