Luke Hovhanesian heads to Wagga with a focus on runners that are either building strong momentum through their preparation or look set to improve with the right race setup.

With the track expected to play fair, his selections centre around horses that can either control the race up front or take advantage of tempo and finish strongly late.

Race 5 – #8 The Stars Align $2.80

The Stars Align has found a new lease on life since joining his current stable, producing back-to-back dominant wins at Nowra and Canberra over this distance.

He now steps up in class, which is the main query, but the manner in which he has been winning suggests he has taken significant improvement.

The 3kg claim is a key advantage here, helping offset that rise in grade, and he draws well enough to settle in a position where he can build into the race.

If he can reproduce the level of his recent performances, he shapes as a major player again despite the tougher assignment.

Race 6 – #11 Brutal Belle $3.10

Brutal Belle does not win out of turn, but her most recent effort suggests she is close to breaking through.

She was extremely brave at Wagga just over a week ago, working early from a wide draw and racing deep throughout before only being beaten a narrow margin.

That run had plenty of merit given the circumstances, and she should strip fitter off the quick turnaround.

If she can find a more economical run in transit, she looks well placed to convert that strong effort into a win.

Race 7 – #13 Harry’s Bar $17.00

Harry’s Bar brings strong form into this through the Provincial Championship, where he covered ground throughout and still worked into the race before peaking late.

That effort suggests he is not far away, and with that run under his belt, he should strip fitter third-up, a stage of his preparation where he has performed well previously.

With his regular rider sticking and a more suitable setup here, he looks well placed and represents value at odds.

Race 7 – #6 Bandi’s Boy $9.00

Bandi’s Boy profiles as the runner to watch if the tempo is strong.

His latest run behind quality opposition showed he is capable of finishing off strongly, and if this race is run at a genuine clip, it will allow him to settle back and produce his best late.

With the right race shape, he can be charging home and making his presence felt in the finish.
