Mick Gannon – Midweek Best Bets 20/5/26

Race 4 – #3 Hovland

Hovland returned in excellent order first-up and produced what looked a clear career peak performance.

He has always shown ability, but importantly he is a proven second-up performer and looks set to improve again here.

The wet ground is another major positive. He relishes rain affected conditions, is already proven at the mile and retains the services of Zac Lloyd.

From the wide draw, he should settle around midfield before working into the race at the right time.

With the track likely favouring runners getting away from the inside and building through the wider lanes late, the setup looks ideal for him.

Everything points towards another big performance.

Race 6 – #1 Glorious Moments

Glorious Moments looks capable of making a winning return.

He finished last preparation in outstanding fashion, winning both starts after returning from a lengthy 459-day break and showing he still has plenty of talent.

The lead-up into this campaign has been strong with three trials under his belt, including a sharp effort in his latest hit-out with James McDonald aboard.

J-Mac sticks with the ride and the map should allow him to settle off the speed before launching late down the centre of the track, where conditions may suit best.

If he returns at the level he finished last prep, he’ll be extremely hard to hold out.

Blackbookers

Race 1 – Pleasure Artist

Pleasure Artist had little chance after being restrained from the draw despite beginning well.

With the tempo against her and settling near the rear in a slowly run race, she was left with far too much to do but still charged home strongly late.

With a more favourable setup next time, she can bounce back quickly.

Race 1 – Strawberry Impact

Strawberry Impact had no luck whatsoever and the run was much better than it looks on paper.

After being squeezed out at the start, he never really found clear room in the straight and was barely tested over the concluding stages.

A rise in trip looks ideal and if able to settle closer in the run next start, he shapes as a major winning chance.

Race 4 – Nitro

Nitro was doing his best work late after conceding far too much start first-up over 1300m.

The effort suggested he has returned well and with the benefit of that run under the belt, he looks set to improve sharply next time around.

He’ll be very hard to beat at his next start.
