Racing heads to Canterbury for a compact midweek program, and with the rail out +3 metres and a firm Good 4 surface, on-pace runners should again hold a clear advantage.

It’s a track that rewards positive rides and momentum at the right time, which plays perfectly into a couple of Mick Gannon’s key selections.

He’s identified two runners who map to control their races and make their own luck.

Race 5 – Horizons $3.50

Horizons gets significant speed-map favours after multiple scratchings and now secures one of the best on-pace riders in the country.

She maps to lead on her own, which is a major advantage around Canterbury.

Her last start on soft ground was below her best, but a return to a firm surface is ideal.

Her main rivals are forced into awkward setups.

Wounder comes back sharply from 2100m and Placid Pearl rises from 1600m to 1900m for the first time.

Look for Hippo to control the race from the front, begin lifting the tempo well before the turn and try to open up a break on straightening.

Race 3 – Sarrismo $3.50

Sarrismo’s last-start effort reads superbly.

She went stride for stride with rising star Green Spaces, who franked the form last Saturday with a dominant Group 3 win at Newcastle by three lengths.

The pair gapped the rest by 6.7 lengths.

Dylan Gibbons takes over, and from the wide alley expect positive intent to land on speed and take bad luck out of the equation.

If that previous form line stands up, she will give a strong sight late.
