The Caulfield Cup remains one of the great races in Australian racing history.

First run in 1879, this time-honoured 2400m staying contest has long been a launchpad to Melbourne Cup glory and a genuine test of stamina, strategy, and timing.

Where The Everest is a spectacle of speed, the Caulfield Cup is a true puzzle for punters and this year’s edition is exactly that.

It’s a wide-open race, loaded with international intrigue, proven locals, and more than a few at double-figure odds who can genuinely win.

The favourite Half Yours has been the talk of the town and rightly so after two brilliant runs in lead-up Group 1 company.

However, as is so often the case in this race, it’s not always the hot pot who takes the prize.

Punters looking to go wide will find plenty of reasons to shop around.

Caulfield Cup 2025 Tips & Best Bets

Track Conditions

The Caulfield surface is in outstanding order, rated a Good 4, with fine weather in the lead-up.

The rail is out 3 metres, following midweek racing where it sat at 12m.

So far this spring, the track has played fair and true, giving every horse its chance.

Speed Map & Race Shape

This year’s Cup doesn’t have many natural leaders, so don’t expect a brutal tempo.

Expect Banker’s Choice to roll forward from out wide and Plymouth to slide across to join him.

Presage Nocturne and Adelaide River will take a trail, while most of the main chances Absurde, Half Yours, Meydaan, and Royal Supremacy will all settle midfield and need luck at the right time.

With so many drawn low, the key to winning might simply be finding clear air at the top of the straight.

Stats That Matter (Last 25 Years)

  • Favourites have won 9 of the last 25, but only one has started under $3.

  • Average winning price: $12.36.

  • 4YOs have been dominant (12 wins), with Plymouth the only one in this year’s field.

  • Barrier 6 is the magic gate — producing four winners. (Royal Supremacy has drawn barrier 6 this year.)

  • Barrier 1 has never produced a Caulfield Cup winner since barriers were introduced in 1947. (Bad news for Absurde.)

  • Most successful weight: 52.5kg, carried this year by Half Yours and Royal Supremacy.

Selections & Analysis

1st – #4 Meydaan ($8.50)

The Crisfords know exactly what it takes to target a Caulfield Cup.

They trained West Wind Blows to a gallant second last year and formerly prepared Without A Fight, who went on to win both Cups in 2023–24.

Meydaan might not have the same résumé, but this race is far more open.

His European form around Giavellotto and Kalpana is elite, and both franked that form in France.

Barrier 5 gives him the perfect map, and Andrea Atzeni’s booking is a huge plus.

He’ll be ahead of Half Yours in the run and that might make the difference.

2nd – #15 Half Yours ($2.90)

No denying his class.

He’s the best of the locals and brings the Turnbull Stakes form, which has been the key lead-up race for years.

The weight drop to 52.5kg is ideal, but barrier 2 could be his undoing if he’s bottled up when it matters.

Still, if Jamie Melham finds clear air at the right time, he’s every chance to win and justify the favouritism, just not at the price.

3rd – #12 Revelare ($23.00)

Massive overs.

Forgive the last run and prior to that, he looked right on track for this.

He’s a dry-tracker through and through (6 wins from 8 on Good ground) and is crying out for this trip.

Could surprise a few late.

4th – #10 Deakin ($17.00)

A rock-solid stayer who’s been building perfectly this prep. Matched strides with Half Yours last start and now gets a softer map from a better draw.

If you like the favourite, you have to respect Deakin at more than five times the price.

Cody’s Verdict

This race sets up beautifully for Meydaan, who looks ready to deliver the Crisfords their long-overdue Caulfield Cup triumph.

Half Yours is all class and will run well again, while Revelare and Deakin offer genuine each-way value for punters looking outside the obvious.

Top 4:

  1. Meydaan

  2. Half Yours

  3. Revelare

  4. Deakin
