The Caulfield Cup is one of the great races on the Australian racing calendar, and the 2026 edition promises to be another fascinating contest.

First run in the 19th century, the time-honoured 2400m feature celebrates its 150th running, bringing together an outstanding field of Australian and international stayers.

With The Everest taking centre stage in Sydney on the same afternoon, Caulfield Cup Day has quickly become one of the most anticipated Saturdays of the spring carnival.

This year's field has everything.

Three international challengers, previous Melbourne Cup winners, Derby and Oaks champions, and a host of proven Group 1 performers will battle for one of Australian racing's most prestigious prizes.

Among them is Half Yours, who returns attempting to defend his Caulfield Cup crown after completing the Cups double last year.

The favourite, Cosmic Crusader, arrives in outstanding form following his Turnbull Stakes victory, while emerging international contender Wine Dark Sea adds another dimension to an already competitive race.

Rather than simply concentrating on the favourite, I've assessed the entire field, weighing up their recent performances, barriers, weights, jockey bookings and suitability at 2400m.

And after working through all the runners, I'm backing Half Yours to make it consecutive Caulfield Cup victories.

Cody Lane’s 2026 Caulfield Cup Preview – Half Yours Tipped to Defend His Crown

Track Conditions – Caulfield Cup Day

Caulfield is expected to present a Good 4 surface, with the rail positioned 3m out.

Those conditions should provide an even racing surface and give the majority of runners an opportunity to perform to their best.

The expected dry track is particularly important for several leading contenders who struggled on Heavy ground in the Turnbull Stakes.

Horses such as Zahrann, Saint George and She's A Hustler have genuine excuses from their latest appearances and could improve significantly on firmer ground.

With a relatively modest amount of early speed expected, barrier positions and tactical decisions will also be crucial.

Caulfield Cup Barrier Statistics

Historical barrier results provide an interesting reference, although they shouldn't be treated as the deciding factor when assessing a runner.

Cody's analysis of winners since 2000 highlights the following:

Barrier Wins since 2000
1 0
2 2
3 3
4 1
5 1
6 3
7 2
8 1
9 2
10 2
11 2
12 0
13 2
14 0
15 2
16 0
17 1
18 2

Barriers three and six have each produced three winners since 2000, while gates one, 12, 14 and 16 have yet to produce a winner over that period.

The historical record also shows that wide draws aren't necessarily impossible to overcome.

Incentivise won from barrier 18 in 2021, while Mer De Glace succeeded from barrier 17 in 2019.

That offers some encouragement for Cosmic Crusader, although William Pike will still need to produce an excellent ride from his wide starting position.

Barrier positions are those supplied before scratchings and may change.

Cody Lane’s Caulfield Cup Runner-by-Runner Preview

Half Yours 1. Half Yours – $9.00

Weight: 57.5kg
Barrier: 7
Trainer: Tony & Calvin McEvoy
Jockey: Mark Zahra
Predicted Finish: 1st

The defending champion returns looking to achieve something special.

Half Yours completed the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 2025, and now attempts to become just the third horse to win consecutive Caulfield Cups.

There's plenty to like about his chances.

He's unbeaten in two appearances over 2400m, confirming his suitability at the distance, and his preparation has been solid enough to suggest he's building towards another peak performance.

The booking of Mark Zahra is another major positive.

Zahra has been riding in excellent form, recording a 20% winning strike rate over the past month, and his experience in major races will be invaluable.

He replaces Jamie Kah, who partnered Half Yours to last year's Cups double.

There are a couple of historical concerns.

Only one horse has won a Caulfield Cup after previously winning a Melbourne Cup, while Zahra's record when combining with the McEvoy stable stands at just one win from 27 rides.

However, those statistics don't outweigh the horse's proven ability.

Half Yours knows how to win at this level, handles the distance perfectly and has drawn a barrier that should give Zahra options.

The 57.5kg is a challenge, but five topweights have won the race since 2002.

Verdict: Proven at the distance, ideally drawn and prepared for another major performance.

Cosmic Crusader 2. Cosmic Crusader – $4.80

Weight: 56kg
Barrier: 17
Trainer: Andrea Leek
Jockey: William Pike
Predicted Finish: 5th

Cosmic Crusader arrives as the race favourite following an outstanding preparation.

His Turnbull Stakes victory was particularly impressive, and he appears to be improving as his races increase in distance.

He also boasts an exceptional record at Caulfield, with two wins and two placings from four appearances.

Perhaps most remarkably, he hasn't finished outside the top three in two and a half years.

William Pike takes the ride in outstanding form, having recorded a 35.7% winning strike rate over the past month.

The major questions surround the distance and barrier.

Cosmic Crusader tackles 2400m for the first time, and history shows that winning the Caulfield Cup at a first attempt over the distance is a difficult achievement.

The wide draw in barrier 17 is another obstacle.

Pike will need to work out how to get across without covering excessive ground or using too much energy early.

There's no doubt Cosmic Crusader has the talent to win, and his strong Turnbull performance suggests the distance could suit.

But at the current price, the combination of an unfamiliar trip and difficult barrier makes him less appealing.

Verdict: A major contender on ability, but barrier 17 and the first attempt at 2400m are significant concerns.

Treasure 3. Treasurethe Moment – $31.00

Weight: 55.5kg
Barrier: 5
Trainer: Matt Laurie
Jockey: Daniel Stackhouse
Predicted Finish: 9th

Treasurethe Moment is a dual Oaks winner with the class to compete at this level.

However, her preparation has been inconsistent.

She produced an excellent second behind Pride Of Jenni in the Group 2 Feehan Stakes but has mixed that performance with several disappointing efforts.

The return to 2400m is the major positive.

She hasn't raced over this distance since her two Oaks victories, and the additional ground could help her rediscover her best form.

Her Caulfield record is also impressive, with four wins and three placings from nine starts.

Trainer Matt Laurie has been operating at a strong 23.9% winning strike rate over the past month, although jockey Daniel Stackhouse's recent strike rate has been considerably lower.

At $31, she's capable of running better than the market expects.

But her current form makes it difficult to have her among the leading winning chances.

Verdict: The distance could spark improvement, but she needs to rediscover her best form.

Kingswood 4. Kingswood – $21.00

Weight: 55kg
Barrier: 20
Trainer: Gavin Bedggood
Jockey: John Allen
Predicted Finish: 12th

Kingswood has been building steadily towards the Caulfield Cup.

He resumed with a strong victory in the Heatherlie Handicap under 61kg before recording two fourth placings in stronger company.

Those performances suggest he's holding his form well.

John Allen knows the horse exceptionally well, having partnered him to four of his six career victories.

The combination of Allen and Gavin Bedggood also boasts a healthy 21.1% winning strike rate.

However, the wide barrier is a major concern.

Kingswood may be able to follow Wine Dark Sea across the field, but there's a genuine risk of being caught wide if Enfjaar pushes forward from the inside draw.

His only previous attempt at 2400m resulted in a fifth placing, beaten 7.1 lengths in the 2024 Zipping Classic.

He's going well enough to be competitive, but he'll need plenty of luck.

Verdict: Racing consistently, although the wide barrier and distance record make him difficult to recommend.

Knight's Choice 5. Knight’s Choice – $34.00

Weight: 55kg
Barrier: 22
Trainers: John Symons & Sheila Laxon
Jockey: Robbie Dolan
Predicted Finish: 11th

The 2024 Melbourne Cup winner looks capable of running considerably better than his price suggests.

Knight's Choice was desperately unlucky in the Herbert Power Stakes last Saturday and arguably should have won.

That performance suggests he's reaching peak fitness at precisely the right time.

The outside barrier isn't necessarily disastrous because he's likely to settle towards the rear regardless.

Robbie Dolan can allow him to find his rhythm before attempting to work into the race.

The concerns are his lack of success at Caulfield and over this distance range.

There's also the historical challenge of winning a Caulfield Cup after previously claiming a Melbourne Cup.

But his latest performance suggests he's ready to run well.

Verdict: A big-priced runner capable of outperforming expectations, particularly if the race sets up for the backmarkers.

Middle Earth 6. Middle Earth – $26.00

Weight: 55kg
Barrier: 11
Trainer: Ciaron Maher
Jockey: Thomas Stockdale
Predicted Finish: 16th

Middle Earth returns for another attempt at the Caulfield Cup after finishing 11th last year before improving to third in the Melbourne Cup.

His preparation this time has been disappointing.

Across his past three starts, he's been beaten a combined 21.8 lengths, and his record at Caulfield is particularly concerning.

He's yet to finish in the placings from six appearances at the track.

There are some positives.

Middle Earth has won twice from five attempts over this distance range, and the Maher–Stockdale combination has a strong 19.8% winning strike rate.

He was also out of form heading into last year's Cups campaign before producing a much better performance over the longer distances.

A similar turnaround is possible, but there's little in his recent form to suggest it's likely.

Verdict: Could improve at 2400m, but his recent performances and Caulfield record are difficult to overlook.

Enfjaar 7. Enfjaar – $13.00

Weight: 54.5kg
Barrier: 1
Trainer: Roger Varian
Jockey: Ray Dawson
Predicted Finish: 10th

Enfjaar is an interesting international contender who should enjoy a favourable position in running.

He produced an impressive victory in the Group 3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood over 2414m, successfully handling the distance at his first attempt.

His first-up record is also strong, with three wins from six appearances.

The major tactical advantage is barrier one.

With limited early speed expected, Enfjaar should be able to settle close to the lead without doing too much work.

However, the inside draw comes with a historical warning.

No horse has won the Caulfield Cup from barrier one in the modern barrier records cited in Cody's analysis.

He also tackles Group 1 company for the first time.

Enfjaar has the stamina to be competitive and should give his supporters a good sight, but this is a significant rise in class.

Verdict: Maps favourably and should stay the distance, although the Group 1 class test is substantial.

Green Spaces 8. Green Spaces – $31.00

Weight: 54.5kg
Barrier: 18
Trainer: Bjorn Baker
Jockey: Rachel King
Predicted Finish: 13th

Green Spaces is one of the more difficult runners to assess.

His Australian Derby victory earlier this year was outstanding, scoring by 3.2 lengths and establishing himself as a genuine Cups prospect.

However, he hasn't reproduced that level of performance this preparation.

He's finished a combined 20.4 lengths behind the winners across his past four starts.

The positive is his age profile.

Four-year-olds have an excellent Caulfield Cup record, and both Bjorn Baker and Rachel King enter the race in strong form.

King has won three of her seven rides at Caulfield, while Baker has trained six winners and three placegetters from 20 runners at the track.

The talent is clearly there.

If Green Spaces can rediscover his Derby form, he could become a serious contender.

But based on his recent performances, he's difficult to support with confidence.

Verdict: Has the ability to surprise, but needs a dramatic turnaround in form.

Royal Supremacy 9. Royal Supremacy – $15.00

Weight: 54.5kg
Barrier: 8
Trainer: Ciaron Maher
Jockey: Jamie Spencer
Predicted Finish: 8th

Royal Supremacy has several factors in his favour.

He finished fifth in last year's Caulfield Cup after winning the Metropolitan Stakes at his previous start.

He also has an excellent record over staying distances, having missed the placings only once in this distance range.

That defeat came in last year's Caulfield Cup.

His latest performance was encouraging, leading throughout to win the Group 3 JRA Cup over 2000m at Caulfield while carrying 60kg.

That was a strong effort and suggests he's building towards another competitive performance.

The main concern is the strength of the opposition he's been facing.

He hasn't consistently been racing against the elite stayers since last year's Cups campaign.

However, his barrier, distance record and recent victory provide enough encouragement to expect another solid showing.

Verdict: A consistent stayer who should run well, although others appeal more strongly as winning chances.

Wine Dark Sea 10. Wine Dark Sea – $9.00

Weight: 54.5kg
Barrier: 19
Trainer: Harry Charlton
Jockey: Damian Lane
Predicted Finish: 2nd

Wine Dark Sea is the international runner I like most.

The progressive four-year-old arrives with an excellent staying profile and appears ideally suited to the demands of the Caulfield Cup.

He's been beaten only once in three attempts around 2400m, and that defeat came by just 0.3 lengths.

His latest victory in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury was particularly encouraging.

That race included established Group 1 performer Dubai Honour, giving the form considerable interest.

Wine Dark Sea is lightly raced, making just his 11th career start, and still appears to have plenty of improvement ahead.

Four-year-olds have an outstanding historical record in the Caulfield Cup, and he fits the profile of a horse capable of taking another significant step forward.

The wide barrier is the obvious concern.

However, Damian Lane may be able to work across and secure a forward position if the early tempo is moderate.

If he can achieve that without using too much energy, Wine Dark Sea should enjoy an excellent run.

Verdict: The strongest of the international challengers and my main danger to Half Yours.

Asterix 11. Asterix – $51.00

Weight: 53.5kg
Barrier: 10
Trainer: Chris Waller
Jockey: Beau Mertens
Predicted Finish: 14th

Asterix is an experienced stayer with a strong record over 2400m.

He's won three of his five appearances at the distance and should appreciate dropping to 53.5kg after regularly carrying bigger weights.

His latest performance in the Turnbull Stakes was disappointing, although the Heavy track provides a possible excuse.

He had previously run well in the Naturalism Stakes behind Zahrann and Saint George.

If those runners feature prominently, Asterix could prove better than his $51 quote suggests.

However, the historical challenge is significant.

At eight years of age, he's attempting to become the first horse of that age to win the Caulfield Cup in 96 years.

Beau Mertens has also been struggling for winners recently.

Verdict: A capable stayer who could improve on dry ground, but others appear to have stronger winning claims.

Saint George 12. Saint George – $8.00

Weight: 53.5kg
Barrier: 2
Trainer: Ciaron Maher
Jockey: Craig Williams
Predicted Finish: 6th

Saint George is another runner whose latest performance can be forgiven.

He struggled on the Heavy track in the Turnbull Stakes, but his form before that was excellent.

His Naturalism Stakes performance behind Zahrann is particularly relevant.

He now receives a 3kg weight swing in his favour against that rival, which gives him an opportunity to narrow the margin.

The draw is another advantage.

Barrier two should allow Craig Williams to secure an economical run, and the Maher–Williams combination has an excellent 21.3% winning strike rate.

Williams himself has also been riding well, recording an 18.2% strike rate over the past month.

The question is whether the Naturalism form is strong enough to win a Caulfield Cup.

I'm not convinced it is, even with the favourable weight swing.

Verdict: Should improve sharply on a dry track and can finish close, but isn't among my preferred winning selections.

Starford 13. Starford – $18.00

Weight: 53.5kg
Barrier: 15
Trainer: Joseph O'Brien
Jockey: Lachlan Neindorf
Predicted Finish: 7th

Starford is another lightly raced international challenger with an appealing staying profile.

The four-year-old has regularly carried substantial weights in his European races and should appreciate having just 53.5kg on his back.

His latest appearance resulted in a third placing as an odds-on favourite in the Listed Lenebane Stakes at Roscommon.

That wasn't an ideal result, but his overall profile remains interesting.

Four-year-olds have a strong record in the Caulfield Cup, while international trainers have enjoyed considerable success in recent years.

The concerns surround the barrier and jockey booking.

Lachlan Neindorf will need to produce an excellent ride from barrier 15, particularly given the importance of securing a favourable position early.

His recent strike rate and overall Caulfield record are also below those of several rival jockeys.

Verdict: Has the right staying profile and could finish in the top half with a suitable run.

Hustler 14. She’s A Hustler – $16.00

Weight: 53kg
Barrier: 6
Trainer: Grahame Begg
Jockey: Michael Dee
Predicted Finish: 4th

She's A Hustler is one of the runners capable of improving significantly on her latest performance.

She struggled on the Heavy track in the Turnbull Stakes, but her previous fifth placing in the Makybe Diva Stakes was much more encouraging.

The return to 2400m is a major positive.

Her only previous attempt at the distance resulted in a brilliant victory in the Zipping Classic, demonstrating that she's capable of producing a strong staying performance.

Barrier six should also give Michael Dee the opportunity to secure a favourable run.

I expect her to be travelling comfortably approaching the home turn before working into the race.

Grahame Begg has been training at a 20% winning strike rate over the past month, while his combination with Dee has also been productive.

The expected Good track should be another important advantage.

Verdict: A genuine chance of fighting out the finish and one of my preferred runners for the exotics.

Soul of spain 15. Soul Of Spain – $31.00

Weight: 53kg
Barrier: 13
Trainer: Chris Waller
Jockey: Tyler Schiller
Predicted Finish: 17th

Soul Of Spain has the ability to compete in strong staying company, but his recent performances have been difficult to assess.

He finished runner-up in the Sydney Cup earlier this year, demonstrating that he can perform over demanding distances.

However, his recent form has been inconsistent.

The main encouraging effort came two starts ago when he finished third behind The Euphrates in the Group 2 Kingston Town Stakes over 2000m.

Outside that performance, he hasn't shown enough to inspire confidence.

He's also yet to win from six attempts around 2400m.

Tyler Schiller has been riding reasonably well, but Soul Of Spain will need to produce a much stronger performance than we've seen recently.

Verdict: His best form would make him competitive, but his current performances suggest he'll struggle.

Zahrann 16. Zahrann – $7.50

Weight: 53kg
Barrier: 4
Trainer: Ciaron Maher
Jockey: Ethan Brown
Predicted Finish: 3rd

Zahrann is one of the strongest winning chances in the race.

His latest performance in the Turnbull Stakes was disappointing, but the Heavy track provides a clear excuse.

Before that, he produced an outstanding victory in the Naturalism Stakes, confirming his ability to compete against strong opposition.

His international form is also impressive.

He won a Listed race over 2400m at Leopardstown before finishing second in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot.

Those performances demonstrate that the Caulfield Cup distance should suit him perfectly.

He also draws beautifully in barrier four.

The booking of Ethan Brown is another major positive.

Brown has been riding in sensational form, recording a 32.3% winning strike rate over the past month, while his combination with Ciaron Maher has also been highly successful.

With a dry track, favourable barrier and proven staying credentials, there is very little to dislike.

Verdict: A major winning threat who can bounce back sharply from his Turnbull failure.

Ohope Win 17. Ohope Wins – $21.00

Weight: 51.5kg
Barrier: 16
Trainer: Chris Waller
Jockey: Jye McNeil
Predicted Finish: 15th

Ohope Wins is a dual Oaks winner who should appreciate returning to 2400m.

She claimed both the New Zealand Oaks and Australian Oaks earlier this year, establishing herself as a talented staying filly.

However, her performances this preparation have been disappointing.

She simply hasn't reproduced the form that made her such an exciting prospect.

The light weight of 51.5kg is an advantage, but the wide barrier creates another challenge.

There's also the historical obstacle of attempting to become the first winner from barrier 16 in the modern records used for this preview.

At her best, Ohope Wins would be a serious contender.

The problem is that her best form has been missing throughout this campaign.

Verdict: Has the staying credentials to improve, but her recent performances make her difficult to support.

Kings Valley 18. King’s Valley – $31.00

Weight: 51kg
Barrier: 12
Trainer: Ciaron Maher
Jockey: Jabez Johnstone
Predicted Finish: 18th

King's Valley secured his Caulfield Cup place by winning the Mornington Cup.

That victory provided his golden ticket into the feature, but his subsequent form has been inconsistent.

He produced a respectable seventh in the Naturalism Stakes but has otherwise struggled throughout the preparation.

The return to 2400m could bring improvement, particularly given his previous staying success.

However, there are several historical challenges to overcome.

No winner has emerged from barrier 12 in the modern records cited, while the last horse to win the Caulfield Cup carrying 51kg was Imposera in 1988.

Jabez Johnstone is also attempting to become the first apprentice jockey to win the race since 1996.

Those statistics aren't impossible to overcome, but his recent form is the greater concern.

Verdict: Needs a substantial improvement on recent performances and looks one of the outsiders.

Cody Lane’s Caulfield Cup Top Four

Rank Runner Odds
1st #1 Half Yours $9.00
2nd #10 Wine Dark Sea $9.00
3rd #16 Zahrann $7.50
4th #14 She’s A Hustler $16.00

Cody Lane’s Best Bet – Half Yours ($9.00)

After assessing the entire field, Half Yours is my selection to win the 2026 Caulfield Cup.

The defending champion has already demonstrated that he possesses the class, stamina and determination required to win Australia's biggest staying races.

His unbeaten record over 2400m is a major advantage, and the return to his preferred distance should bring out his best.

The switch from Jamie Kah to Mark Zahra is an interesting change, but Zahra is one of Australia's leading big-race riders and enters the contest in excellent form.

From barrier seven, he should have the opportunity to position Half Yours where he's comfortable before building into the race.

The 57.5kg is a challenge, and history shows that backing up after a Melbourne Cup victory is no easy task.

But Half Yours has already proven himself capable of overcoming significant challenges.

At $9, I'm happy to back the defending champion to make it two consecutive Caulfield Cup victories.

Caulfield Cup Verdict

The 2026 Caulfield Cup shapes as an outstanding staying contest, with several genuine winning chances.

Cosmic Crusader is the deserved favourite based on his exceptional recent form, but the wide barrier and first attempt at 2400m make him vulnerable at the price.

Wine Dark Sea is the international runner I want to follow. He has the ideal age profile, strong staying form and plenty of improvement ahead.

Zahrann is another major contender who can bounce back on a dry track, particularly with Ethan Brown riding in outstanding form.

She's A Hustler also appeals as a strong top-four chance after drawing well and returning to a distance where she's previously excelled.

But the horse they all have to beat is Half Yours.

He knows exactly what it takes to win a Caulfield Cup, and his preparation suggests he's ready to produce another peak performance.

Best Bet: Caulfield Cup – #1 Half Yours ($9.00)
