The equation is simple ahead of Saturday's Group 1 Champions Mile at Flemington.

It's the powerhouse Sydney mare at a red-hot price against the rest.

Autumn Glow has built an extraordinary record, winning 14 of her 15 starts, and her performances are gradually moving beyond generational levels.

In fact, you have to go back more than two years to find the last time she started in the red.

Even in her sole defeat in last year's Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes, she jumped at just $1.30.

She's also remarkably fresh heading into Saturday's assignment.

Her three runs this preparation have been little more than glorified barrier trials, particularly the King Charles III Stakes three weeks ago, when she faced just four rivals.

But does she simply win again from a favourable draw? And is the early $1.28 justified, or has the market gone too far?

Hold your horses.

While Autumn Glow deserves to be a dominant favourite, I believe there's a genuine danger lurking at much bigger odds.

Neil Evans’ Champions Mile Preview 2026

Flemington Track Conditions – Champions Mile

The Flemington track is expected to play an important role in Saturday's Group 1 contest.

With the surface around a Soft 5 on Oaks Day and further rain forecast for Saturday, I'm expecting conditions to deteriorate towards a Soft 6.

That could prove significant for several runners, particularly those who prefer firmer ground.

Autumn Glow has an outstanding record on rain-affected tracks, but the conditions could also bring one of her main challengers right into contention.

Champions Mile Speed Map & Race Shape

There doesn't appear to be a great deal of early speed in this year's Champions Mile.

Leader – Lindermann

Lindermann should roll forward naturally from his favourable draw and take up the running.

With little pressure expected early, he may be able to dictate the tempo and attempt to stack the field up before sprinting.

On-Pace – Autumn Glow & Another Wil

Autumn Glow should enjoy a charmed run directly behind the speed, with Another Wil also pushing forward.

The favourite is unlikely to have to do much work early, which is another reason she'll be extremely difficult to beat.

Midfield – Tom Kitten, Sepals & Pounding

Tom Kitten should settle in the next group, racing off the fence.

Sepals and Pounding are expected to settle to his inside, putting Sepals within striking distance of Autumn Glow.

That position could be crucial if the race develops into a sprint home.

Rear – Buckaroo, El Soleado & Within The Law

Buckaroo is expected to settle well back, alongside El Soleado and Within The Law.

These runners may need the leaders to establish a stronger tempo than anticipated to bring them into contention.

Expected Race Shape

I'm expecting a steadily run mile, with Lindermann controlling the speed and Autumn Glow enjoying an economical run behind him.

That should favour horses capable of producing a sharp turn of foot rather than those relying on a genuinely run staying test.

For mine, the key will be whether a rival can make an early move and force Autumn Glow into a sprint before she's ready.

That's where Sepals comes into the picture.

The Favourite – Autumn Glow ($1.28)

Let's not pretend Autumn Glow isn't the horse to beat.

She's the queen of Australian racing, has won 14 of her 15 starts and is unbeaten in eight appearances on rain-affected ground.

From her favourable draw, she's expected to enjoy an ideal run just behind the leaders.

With little overall speed in the race, everything points towards another victory.

But $1.28?

I wouldn't touch that price with a barge pole.

I've got her rated closer to $1.65, and while the reasons for opposing her are relatively thin, they're genuine.

Firstly, this will be her first attempt racing the Melbourne way of going.

Secondly, she's tackling a Flemington surface that has already endured considerable traffic throughout the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

The track has been raced on heavily since Derby Day, and with further rain expected, conditions could become testing.

Neither factor is necessarily enough to stop a mare of her quality, but at $1.28, I want everything in her favour.

There's just enough uncertainty to suggest she could be vulnerable over the final 100m.

My Verdict: Clearly the horse to beat, but $1.28 is far too short. I have her rated around $1.65 and am happy to look elsewhere for value.

Champions Mile Main Dangers

Lindermann ($12)

Lindermann comes into the Champions Mile following a dominant Group 2 victory at Randwick.

He's expected to lead from his favourable draw and could prove difficult to run down if allowed to control the tempo.

The key will be how slowly he can run the early stages before asking his rivals to chase.

However, his preference for firmer ground is a genuine concern, particularly with a Soft 6 surface potentially in play.

If conditions remain suitable, he's capable of giving the favourite something to chase.

Tom Kitten ($13)

Tom Kitten was game when chasing home Lindermann at his latest appearance.

He should settle in a reasonable position just off the speed and has the ability to produce a competitive finishing effort.

The return of blinkers is a significant positive and could help him find the improvement required.

Like Lindermann, however, he may appreciate a drier surface than the one expected on Saturday.

My Verdict: Both Lindermann and Tom Kitten have the ability to feature prominently, but the expected rain-affected ground is a concern.

Neil Evans' Champions Mile Best Bet – Sepals ($18 Each-Way)

Sepals is the runner I want to be with at the price.

Forget his trainwreck performance in the Group 3 at Rosehill a month ago.

That run is best ignored.

He's since returned home, completed a nice jumpout and is reportedly in excellent condition heading into Saturday's assignment.

More importantly, he's right at home on soft ground.

With rain expected and the Flemington surface likely to be around a Soft 6, conditions could play directly into his hands.

The speed map is another major positive.

Sepals should be able to settle just behind Autumn Glow, keeping the favourite within striking distance throughout the race.

Ideally, I'd like to see him begin his move from around the 650m mark, building momentum before the field straightens.

If he can take off early and turn the race into a genuine sprint home, he has the acceleration to make things interesting.

The gear changes also look sound, and I believe he's the one runner in this field with enough acceleration off any tempo to genuinely trouble the star mare.

Back up to the mile, with suitable conditions and an attractive map, Sepals looks enormous each-way value at $18.

I'm not suggesting Autumn Glow is suddenly going to become an ordinary racehorse.

Far from it.

But at the respective prices, there's a huge difference between identifying the most likely winner and finding the best bet.

My Best Bet: # Sepals ($18 Each-Way)

I'll be backing Sepals each-way and playing the obvious quinella with Autumn Glow.

Neil Evans' Champions Mile Top Four Selections

Rank Runner Price Assessment
1st Sepals $18 Best Bet – each-way value
2nd Autumn Glow $1.28 Clear horse to beat, but too short
3rd Lindermann $12 Likely leader, dry-track preference a concern
4th Tom Kitten $13 Blinkers back on, capable of improving

Neil's Final Champions Mile Verdict

Autumn Glow deserves her position at the top of the market, and I certainly won't be surprised if she extends her remarkable winning record.

But at $1.28, I can't justify backing her.

Racing the Melbourne way for the first time, a heavily used Flemington surface, and the possibility of testing conditions create just enough uncertainty.

Sepals is the horse I believe can take advantage.

He's suited to rain-affected ground, should enjoy a favourable run behind the favourite, and has the acceleration to challenge her if the race becomes a sprint home.

At $18, the price makes him a far more attractive betting proposition.

Best Bet: Sepals ($18 Each-Way)

Quinella: Sepals and Autumn Glow

My Top Four: Sepals, Autumn Glow, Lindermann and Tom Kitten.
