There’s no race like the Cox Plate at Moonee Valley.

The tight turns, the roars from the packed stands and the world-class horses looping around the bend, it’s pure theatre.

And this year’s edition carries extra emotion, as it’s the last ever Cox Plate run on this historic circuit before the Valley undergoes a major facelift.

From Kingston Town’s impossible third win, to Bonecrusher vs Our Waverley Star, to the legend of Winx and the destruction job Via Sistina pulled off last year.

This is a race that makes history, not just memories.

And while she’s back to defend her crown, this year’s Plate looks far more open than the market suggests.

Cox Plate 2025 Tips & Best Bets

Track Conditions

Currently rated a Good 4, and while there’s a sniff of rain around, it shouldn’t be enough to change things.

The rail is in the True position and on Cox Plate Day, they usually get it playing pretty fair.

Look for those on-pace to have their chance, but good horses can still swoop.

Speed Map & Race Shape

With Globe out, there’s no obvious leader which adds another tactical layer.

Attrition (2) could be forced to take it up, with Light Infantry Man (8) sitting outside.

Treasurethe Moment (1) maps beautifully behind the speed, and Via Sistina (5) just outside her.

Antino (6) to stalk from a pair further back, with Aeliana (7) in a similar spot depending on the jump.

The backmarkers Nepotism (3) and Buckaroo (4) will need the pace on to feature late.

This shapes as a sit-and-sprint rather than a slog, favouring those with tactical speed and a turn of foot.

Cody’s Selections & Analysis

1st – #7 Treasurethe Moment $6.00

She’s the one I want to be with.

Maps perfectly from the inside draw, gets a soft run and this shapes as her ideal tempo.

She’s been chasing tearaway leaders in her last two starts, that’s not her go.

This race suits her pattern, she’s got the turn of foot and she’s a big price for a horse with this setup.

Grand Final day mare, ready to peak.

2nd – #8 Aeliana $8.00

The forgotten horse.

She’s been right there with Via Sistina all prep yet goes around at more than triple the price.

Draws beautifully in barrier 7, gets every favour in running, and fits the historical winning profile to a tee.

If the breaks go her way, she can absolutely win this.

Watch the key formline for the Cox through the Turnbull Stakes

3rd – #2 Antino $3.90

Blake Shinn will need to earn it here.

He’s had the perfect prep and the Turnbull run was excellent.

The concern is the lack of tempo with Globe coming out.

If they crawl early, he’ll be forced to go wide and make a long, looping move.

A tough ask at The Valley.

4th – #6 Via Sistina $2.20

You can’t leave last year’s Cox Plate queen out, but gee, $2.20 is poison.

Her prep hasn’t been as dominant and while she’s still the benchmark for class, she hasn’t been putting them away like she used to.

She’ll be thereabouts, but I can’t back her at that quote.

This year’s Cox Plate feels like a true farewell to The Valley — a tactical, cagey, wide-open edition where the favourite isn’t bulletproof and a few forgotten names could steal the show.

Top 4:

  1. Treasurethe Moment

  2. Aeliana

  3. Antino

  4. Via Sistina
