A challenging Doncaster Handicap over the famous Randwick mile guarantees one thing.
The early short-priced favourite, as smart as she is and carrying a luxury filly’s light weight, is still well under the odds from a tricky draw.
The tough part is working out which runner among a stack of much longer-priced chances represents the real value.
Most of the early speed is drawn wide, and the majority of serious chances will come from just off the speed or even midfield.
For that reason, any pattern trend throughout the day will be vital.

Track Conditions
With little to no rain in the 48 hours leading up to it, before a few showers likely on Saturday, we should settle around a Soft 5.
The Speed Map
Victorian longshot Scheelite is likely to push forward from a wide draw and take the lead, with outsider Hellsing close up.
Both Sixties and Evaporate roll across from wide barriers to sit just off the speed, along with Cristal Clear who also goes forward, and Steparty just behind them.
Linebacker parks in the next group, alongside Militarize, Attica and Autumn Boy, who should tuck in closer to the inside.
Hot favourite Sheza Alibi will look to settle just behind that pack.
Gringotts maps for a soft run around midfield, with Pericles working across from a wide draw.
Encap and Headley Grange are likely to settle in the back half of the field, with Vivy Air towards the rear.
The Favourite
Sheza Alibi is a very talented three-year-old filly who has taken her form to another level this preparation.
Her form lines are strong, highlighted by her dominant win over Autumn Boy in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas over 1600m.
However, that race was run under very different conditions than this one.
She enjoyed a perfect run in a small field that day, whereas this is a high-pressure Doncaster in a capacity field.
The soft track holds no fears, and she should be able to get into clear running from the draw, but the early price around $2.00 was far too short.
She deserves to be at the head of the market, but something closer to $3.60 looks far more realistic.
Neil’s Best Bet
Militarize has not won since his Group 1 three-year-old campaign in the spring of 2023, but that should not deter punters at the big odds on offer.
He looks ideally placed here, third up at the mile and his recent runs suggest he is building towards a peak performance.
He worked home well from the back at Group 3 level, then had no luck in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes over 1500m where he was held up at a crucial stage.
He now drops 4.5kg and looks suited to step to a strongly run mile.
Expect him to settle midfield with cover and be very strong late over the final 400m.
The Dangers
Gringotts ($17.00) looks to have perfect timing third up after running on well in the George Ryder behind unbeaten star Autumn Glow.
Sheza Alibi ($2.00) is an exciting filly chasing five straight wins and should get clear running out wide.
Pericles ($17.00) comes through the same form lines and is ready to peak at his preferred mile trip.
Autumn Boy ($5.50) is the Rosehill Guineas winner dropping back in distance, hard fit and drawn well with blinkers on.
Evaporate ($27.00) is a tough on pace type who carries his lightest weight in some time.
