The Group 1 Doomben 10,000 shapes as one of the most tactical and testing races of the Queensland Carnival so far, with a rain-affected surface set to place a major emphasis on positioning and timing.

With several runners drawn wide searching for cover and plenty of natural speed engaged, the early stages should be genuinely run, setting the race up for those capable of settling off the tempo and finishing strongly through the heavy conditions.

As always at Doomben in the wet, any pattern established earlier in the day will be critical, but on paper this looks a race that should favour horses getting to the outside and building momentum late.

Neil Evan's Doomben 10,000 Preview 2026

Track Conditions

• Current Rating: Heavy 9
• Expected Rating: Heavy range likely maintained
• Track Pattern: Monitor throughout the day, but Doomben traditionally handles sustained rain better than Eagle Farm

While the rain has eased leading into raceday, the track is still expected to remain firmly in the Heavy range and that will bring plenty of runners into contention who are proven in testing ground.

Speed Map & Race Shape

Leaders

Zarastro looks the likely leader early, with Uncommon James pushing forward to sit outside or just behind the speed.

On-Pace

Private Harry should secure a soft run from the inside draw, while Private Eye, Graftburners and Napoleonic all look capable of settling prominently without overworking.

Midfield

Beadman maps to enjoy a soft run tucked away behind the speed, while Rothfire and Devil Night are expected to work across from wider barriers. Another Wil and Payline should settle around midfield with cover.

Rear

Jimmysstar is likely to drift back from the wide draw alongside Warnie and several others who will be relying on tempo and conditions to bring them into the race late.

Race Shape

The pressure looks genuine throughout and in heavy conditions that should make this a real staying test at the 1200m.

With so many runners wanting cover behind the speed, there is every chance the field fans wide turning for home and gives the swoopers their opportunity to attack late.

The Favourite – Jimmysstar

Jimmysstar deserves favouritism in a race like this.

He drops back to 1200m after the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and profiles perfectly fourth-up into the campaign. Importantly, the race setup looks ideal for him with plenty of pressure expected in front.

While he is yet to race on Heavy ground, his Soft track record is outstanding and there is little to suggest the conditions will worry him significantly.

From the wide barrier he should settle comfortably off the speed with cover and if he gets the right trail into the race from the 500m, he looks the horse they all have to beat.

Neil’s Best Bet

I’m very keen on Jimmysstar here.

The drop back from 1400m looks ideal, the tempo should suit perfectly and I think he gets the race run exactly how he wants it.

Provided he handles the Heavy conditions, which I expect he will, he looks set to finish right over the top of them late.

The Dangers

Private Eye ($7.00)

If the inside lanes hold together throughout the day, he becomes a massive threat second-up. Maps to get a lovely economical run and his class is undeniable.

Warnie ($16.00)

Looks one of the key value runners in the race. Loves genuine tempo, handles wet ground and should be charging home strongly late.

Beadman ($12.00)

Hard fit, proven in the conditions and maps for a soft run throughout. Looks ideally suited in a race that should become a grind late.

Napoleonic ($7.00)

Brings strong trial form into the race and if he handles the Heavy conditions, he has the talent to figure prominently fresh.

Neil’s Top Five

  1. JIMMYSSTAR

  2. Private Eye

  3. Warnie

  4. Napoleonic

  5. Beadman
