Can They Catch Jenni?

A small but fascinating field lines up for this year’s Group 1 Doomben Cup, and despite only seven runners accepting, the race shapes as one of the most tactical contests of the Queensland Carnival.

As always, the spotlight centres on Pride Of Jenni and the key questions are obvious.

  • How big of a break does she establish in front?
  • Does anything try to pressure her through the middle stages?
  • And can one of the chasing pack reel her in late if she controls the race on her terms?

Those questions will likely decide the race.

Neil Evans' Doomben Cup 2026 Horse Racing Tips

Track Conditions

• Current Rating: Heavy 8
• Expected Race Day Rating: Soft 7 / Soft 6
• Weather: Little to no rain forecast leading into raceday

The track should continue improving into Saturday and while conditions will still favour horses comfortable in affected ground, it may not be the bottomless surface some expected earlier in the week.

Speed Map & Race Shape

Leader

Pride Of Jenni should comfortably roll to the front and dictate the race exactly how she likes.

On-Pace

She’s A Hustler is expected to settle directly behind the leader, while Birdman and Vauban should land in the next pair stalking the speed.

Midfield / Rear

Half Yours likely drifts back off the tempo alongside Asterix, while Kovalica is expected to settle near the rear and attempt to build momentum late.

Race Shape

Everything revolves around Pride Of Jenni.

If she is allowed to control the tempo cheaply through the middle stages, she becomes incredibly hard to run down.

But if the pressure goes on earlier than expected, the race could set up perfectly for a strong closer to finish over the top.

The smaller field also creates the possibility of a sit-and-sprint from the 800m, which only adds another layer tactically.

The Favourite – Pride Of Jenni

Pride Of Jenni looks likely to start favourite purely because of the race setup.

She maps to lead clearly, receives a valuable 2kg weight pull against the boys and if she gets control in front, she can break their hearts quickly.

The obvious concern is the track.

While she handles some give, the majority of her career victories have come on firmer surfaces and genuinely rain-affected ground has occasionally left her vulnerable late.

Even so, she still shapes as the horse every other runner has to catch.

Neil’s Best Bet – Birdman

I think this race sets up beautifully for Birdman.

His run behind Pride Of Jenni in the Hollindale Stakes was enormous considering the start he conceded and the way the race unfolded.

He got a long way back, had to chase from a difficult position and still managed to get within striking distance late.

This setup looks much more favourable.

With the smaller field, he should settle closer to the mare turning for home and I expect the rain-affected conditions to suit him better late in the race.

If he is within touching distance at the 400m, I think he’s the one most capable of running over the top.

The Main Dangers

Pride Of Jenni

The obvious danger if left alone in front. The race shape could easily play directly into her hands.

Half Yours

Strong stayer who will appreciate any pressure going on through the middle stages. If the leaders overdo it, he can be charging late.

Vauban

Has the class and stamina to figure prominently if conditions become testing. The smaller field may help him settle closer than usual.

Neil’s Top Four

  1. BIRDMAN

  2. Pride Of Jenni

  3. Half Yours

  4. Vauban
