Everest to crown a New Star

There are few spectacles in world racing that rival The Everest.
Born in 2017, the $20 million sprint at Royal Randwick has become Australia’s most electrifying turf showdown, where the fastest horses on the planet collide over 1200 metres.
It’s a clash of the best from across Australia and now the world, with Hong Kong’s elite joining the contest for the first time.
History tells us that winning The Everest requires smarts early, calmness in the mid-race and a lethal burst late.
Favourable barriers and settling just off the pace have been the sweet spot for most winners, but with a global speedstar set to burn along, this year’s edition shapes as one of the most open yet.
Speed Map Overview
Expecting a genuine tempo from the outset.
Overpass and Mazu will spear forward and ensure plenty of early speed.
Angel Capital, Joliestar and Lady Shenandoah are perfectly drawn to track just behind them, stalking for their runs.
Ka Ying Rising sits in the sweet spot from barrier 7, with Zac Purton having the tactical freedom to either press on or camp off the hot speed.
Meanwhile, Jimmysstar and Tempted will bide their time further back, ready to swoop over the concluding stages.

Runner-by-Runner Analysis
1. Ka Ying Rising $1.70 (Barrier 7)
Trainer: David Hayes | Jockey: Zac Purton
A global superstar and Hong Kong’s best sprinter, Ka Ying Rising brings serious X-factor to The Everest.
While his class is undeniable, the question is whether he can translate his dominance abroad to Australian conditions.
Barrier 7 gives Purton options to control the race tempo, either stalking or dictating.
One interesting factor that could bring him undone is the difference between the Randwick and Sha Tin camber.
He lost his bearings in the trial and wouldn't surprise me if the same happened on raceday.
Verdict: The horse to beat. If he travels well and handles the occasion, he wins.
2. Briasa $16.00 (Barrier 10)
Trainer: Michael, John & Wayne Hawkes | Jockey: Tyler Schiller
The reigning TJ Smith winner and Premiere Stakes hero brings red-hot Sydney form into this.
Wide draw in 10 is the only question mark, but he’s racing with confidence and is versatile in his racing pattern.
This is a huge plus in any race, but especially a sprint like The Everest.
Verdict: A genuine local hope who must be respected.
3. Overpass $51.00 (Barrier 9)
Trainer: Bjorn Baker | Jockey: Joshua Parr
The warhorse of the field.
Consistent, brave, and proven under Everest-like pressure.
He’ll spear forward but may be vulnerable late against fresher legs.
Verdict: Likely to be overhauled late.
4. Jimmysstar $13.00 (Barrier 11)
Trainer: Ciaron Maher | Jockey: Ethan Brown
I had never seen 'Jimmy' trial so well before his first up run, and he has been screaming home in his races.
The writing is on the wall and he looks beckoned for a massive performance here.
The draw is once against him again, but there is every possibility we see a 3-wide moving line and that brings him right into contention.
Verdict: The big closer and a major winning chance. Each-way lock.

5. War Machine $9.50 (Barrier 4)
Trainer: Ben, Will & JD Hayes | Jockey: Tim Clark
Still untapped, still improving.
Brings that QLD form that continues to stack up time and time again.
Draws ideally to stalk the leaders and unleash his big finish.
Won’t need to improve much to be right in the finish.
Verdict: Serious knockout chance at value odds.
6. Mazu $101.00 (Barrier 2)
Trainer: Joseph Pride | Jockey: Jason Collett
A proven Everest performer who’ll use the low draw to his advantage.
He’s honest and consistent, but this field looks a touch too sharp.
Verdict: Will give a sight but looks tested late.
7. Jedibeel $201.00 (Barrier 8)
Trainer: Brad Widdup | Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
Solid galloper but lacks the Group 1 brilliance required here.
Verdict: Outclassed at this level.
8. Angel Capital $23.00 (Barrier 3)
Trainer: Chris Waller | Jockey: Ben Melham
Draws ideally to get the perfect sit behind the leaders.
He’s tough, consistent and could be the surprise packet if gaps open at the right time.
Verdict: Can easily sneak into the finish.
9. Joliestar $7.00 (Barrier 5)
Trainer: Chris Waller | Jockey: James McDonald
Top-class mare with tactical speed and a lethal 300m dash.
Her first-up win in The Shorts was electric and she gets another soft run here.
Verdict: The biggest winner from the barrier draw and will have plenty of support.

10. Lady Shenandoah $15.00 (Barrier 6)
Trainer: Chris Waller | Jockey: Damian Lane
A powerhouse mare who thrives under pressure.
From barrier 6 she maps perfectly behind the leaders and will get every chance to pounce late.
Ignore the Manikato run, that was just a mess. If she has come through that in good order, is a massive chance at odds.
Verdict: Perfectly placed and a huge chance to cause an upset.
11. Magic Time $81.00 (Barrier 12)
Trainer: Grahame Begg | Jockey: Michael Dee
A late inclusion and classy mare, but the draw in 12 is a big blow.
Will need everything to go right.
Verdict: Barrier makes life tough. Risking.
12. Tempted $16.00 (Barrier 1)
Trainer: Ciaron Maher | Jockey: Craig Williams
The lone three-year-old filly of the field with just 51kg.
The same formula that produced Everest legends like Yes Yes Yes.
Perfectly drawn in barrier 1 to do no work early.
Verdict: Big danger at the weights.
