Horse Racing Tips for The Golden Rose 2026

The first major three-year-old mountain of the spring arrives at Rosehill on Saturday, with a deep and intriguing field assembling for the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes over 1400m.

Golden Slipper winner Guest House understandably dominates the market after returning outstandingly and now gets to 1400m second-up.

But at his short price, there is a genuine question over whether the gap in betting accurately reflects the depth of his opposition.

St Gotthard brings enormous talent into the race, while Warwoven gets a potentially ideal tactical setup.

Yet it's a runner further down the market, coming through the traditional Group 2 lead-up, who looks significantly over the odds.

Track Conditions

Rosehill should be in excellent order for Golden Rose Day.

After some rain through the middle of the week, conditions have improved and we're headed towards a Good 4 with the rail in the True position.

That should provide an even racing surface and give every runner their opportunity.

The Speed Map

There isn't an abundance of speed on paper, which makes early positioning particularly important.

Plagiarism draws well and looks the likely leader.

Warwoven should take full advantage of his inside barrier and land directly behind the speed, while Castillo King can work across from a wider draw.

Tenebaum draws low and should find the next group, with Guest House likely to settle a few lengths from the lead and find a trail.

St Gotthard has more work to do from his wider barrier and will need to find a position without burning too much early petrol. Cormier should settle around the same division.

Further back, Campione D'Italia can drift into the second half alongside Stormy Marco and likely Under Focus.

Tron Bolt should go back from his wide draw, with Berzelius and outside-drawn Central Europe also likely to settle in the final third.

With only moderate speed expected, those settling further back can't afford to give the leaders too much rope.

 

 

The Favourite – Guest House

Guest House deserves to be favourite.

The Golden Slipper winner is a powerhouse sprinter and gets a suitable progression to 1400m second-up.

Importantly, the map should work in his favour. He can settle a few lengths from the speed, find a trail and get every opportunity to build into the race when the pressure goes on.

The issue is the price.

At around $2.40 through Thursday into Friday, he's under the odds for mine in a Golden Rose with this much depth.

I've got him marked closer to $3.45.

He's clearly one of the horses to beat, but at the current quote I'm happy to look elsewhere.

 

 

The Dangers

Guest House ($2.40) brings the obvious class. He's a Golden Slipper winner, should appreciate getting to 1400m second-up and maps to receive the right run.

Warwoven ($5.50) could get the run of the race. He draws to land immediately behind the speed and, in a race lacking genuine tempo, that position could become a major advantage.

St Gotthard ($4.00) is an ultra-talented colt with a slightly more difficult assignment from the wider draw. He may need to work to find his position, but expect him to be coming strongly when the race gets serious.

 

 

Neil’s Best Bet – #Under Focus ($12)

Under Focus is the runner I've found at the price.

His performance in the Group 2 Run To The Rose behind Warwoven was much better than the result suggests.

After again being slow away, he saved ground underneath runners before angling wider from around the 400m.

From there he produced a long, sustained run to the line, eventually getting within 1.5 lengths of Warwoven.

Now comes the key change.

The son of Too Darn Hot steps to 1400m third-up, and everything about his latest performance suggests he's crying out for the extra distance.

He also draws to find a nice trail around midfield rather than conceding an impossible start.

With that foundation underneath him and the rise to 1400m, this looks the race where he can produce his peak.

At around $12, Under Focus is outstanding value in the Golden Rose.
