A full weight-for-age field, genuine speed pressure and a track that could change complexion throughout the day.

That’s what makes this year’s Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup over 1300m such a fascinating betting race.

Heavy rain through Thursday and Friday is set to leave Eagle Farm with plenty of give underfoot, although improving weather means we should see conditions steadily improve into raceday.

The challenge for punters won’t just be identifying the right horse, it’ll be identifying the right part of the track.

This looks a race where positioning and timing could prove everything.

Track Conditions

• Current Rating: Heavy range through Friday
• Expected Race Day Rating: Soft 7 with possible upgrades later in the card
• Track Pattern: Expect runners to edge wider as the day progresses

Eagle Farm can change quickly once rain stops falling and while early races may be relatively even, I’ll be surprised if jockeys aren’t hunting wider lanes by the latter stages of the meeting.

Neil Evans' Kingsford Smith Cup 2026 Preview

Speed Map & Race Shape

Leaders:
Manaal and Sepals both push forward from wider barriers, while Napoleonic also presses early.

On Pace:
Private Eye maps beautifully from the low draw and should land right behind the speed with Transatlantic nearby.

Midfield:
Desert Lightning, Yellow Brick and Linebacker settle just behind the first wave, while Rothfire, Headley Grange and Another Wil should land midfield with cover.

Backmarkers:
Jimmysstar, Fangirl, King Of Roseau and Skybird are all likely to settle towards the rear and rely on tempo and clear air.

Race Shape:

There looks to be enough speed engaged to ensure this is run genuinely from a long way out.

That should favour horses capable of building momentum wider on the track rather than runners relying on inside runs late.

For those drawn back in the field, avoiding traffic and inferior ground becomes the key.

The Favourite – Jimmysstar

In a race where plenty have chances, around the $5 mark for Jimmysstar still feels fair.

He maps to settle back again from the draw, but unlike some of his rivals, the race shape looks perfectly suited.

He gets pressure up front, should have horses to follow into the race and arrives fifth-up into the campaign looking ready to peak.

The biggest key is simple — stay away from the rail.

Neil’s Best Bet

I think this sets up ideally for Jimmysstar providing he gets clear air early enough.

The Doomben Cup map didn’t work out and he simply gave himself too much to do.

This time around, on a bigger circuit and likely softer ground, the recipe is straightforward.

Get him into clear running from the 600m, stay away from the fence and allow him to build through his gears.

He looks bursting to win now and if he gets momentum into the race, I think he finishes over the top of them.

The Dangers

Splash Back ($14)
Outstanding wet tracker who profiles perfectly third-up. If conditions remain testing, he becomes a major player.

Private Eye ($6.50)
Maps perfectly on-speed and second-up on affected ground suits. Major chance if the inside remains usable.

Headley Grange ($14)
Six weeks between runs with a trial under his belt. His Group 1 closing effort prior was excellent and he thrives in wet conditions.

Sepals ($29)
I’m convinced this horse can run above market expectation fresh. Two jump-outs have been strong and the setup suits.

Neil’s Top Five

1. JIMMYSSTAR
2. Splash Back
3. Private Eye
4. Headley Grange
5. Sepals
