Horse Racing Tips for The Moir Stakes 2026

The Group 1 Moir Stakes gets a dramatic change of scenery this Saturday, shifting from the tight-turning Moonee Valley circuit to the long Sandown Hillside straight while the Valley undergoes its major redevelopment.

And that change could completely alter the complexion of one of Australia’s great speed tests.

The 1000m weight-for-age dash has traditionally been about handling the unique pressure of The Valley, but at Sandown there is far more room for the big closers to wind up.

That could be particularly important this year, with the field containing plenty of high-class sprinters who prefer to settle off the speed and launch late.

Throw in a likely Soft 6 surface, a rail movement of 12 metres from Wednesday’s meeting back to the True position, and a field where most runners are resuming, and there is plenty for punters to dissect.

The key question is whether the likes of Cavalry Girl and Natural Fling can control things up front, or whether the pressure builds early enough to bring the powerful finishers into the race.

Track Conditions

Sandown was rated a Soft 5 heading into Friday, but with intermittent rain continuing, I expect the track to settle somewhere around the Soft 6 range.

The rail comes all the way back to the True position after sitting out a very wide 12m for Wednesday’s midweek meeting.

That puts the field onto predominantly fresh ground, although this is Race 9 on a 10-race card and the pattern could change considerably as the meeting progresses.

I expect jockeys to gradually search away from the inside as the day wears on, making the early races particularly important when assessing where the best ground will be by Moir Stakes time.

 

The Speed Map

There is some serious speed engaged.

Cavalry Girl is the likely leader with her natural early pace, while exciting filly Natural Fling should come charging across from the outside barrier.

Natural Fling can either press on to sit outside Cavalry Girl or take a trail just behind her, depending on how aggressively they want to ride from the wide draw.

Rothfire should park a couple of lengths from the leaders, with Bazaball Rewarded another capable of rolling forward.

Generosity can work through into the next group alongside Geegees Mistrust, while Hearcomesthestar should settle just behind them.

Then come the closers.

Giga Kick is likely to drift into the second half from his wide draw, with My Gladiola and Ole Dancer settling in a similar region.

Skybird should be further back again after drawing wide, while Point Barrow and Extragalactic are likely to settle towards the tail.

The pressure applied by Cavalry Girl and Natural Fling will be crucial. If they turn this into a genuine 1000m speed test, there are some serious finishers waiting to pounce.

 

 

The Favourite – Natural Fling

There is no questioning the talent of Natural Fling.

Her dominant first-up Group 3 victory was the performance of a filly with plenty more to offer, and she now gets into the Moir with just 50kg under the weight-for-age conditions.

Her terrific cruising speed is a major weapon and the drop back 100m shouldn't pose a problem.

But this is an enormous rise in class.

She now has to take on established Group 1 sprinters while also negotiating an outside barrier, and that makes the price crucial.

The early $3.10 was too short for mine.

She's clearly one of the leading chances, but at anything shorter than around $4.25, I'm happy to look elsewhere.

 

 

The Dangers

Giga Kick is the proven top-liner of the field and returns from a sound jump-out. He's very effective on soft ground and his wide barrier should allow him to work into clear air before launching down the long Sandown straight. He commands enormous respect.

Natural Fling is the emerging talent. She's a seriously smart three-year-old with terrific speed, virtually no weight and plenty of upside. If she gets across without doing too much work, she'll take plenty of catching.

Generosity is a high-quality mare who handles soft ground and has been prepared for her return with two Sydney trials. She gets the conditions to run extremely well fresh.

Cavalry Girl faces a significant rise in grade but brings one weapon that can take her a long way: pure speed. She's won her past three starts, progressing through to Group 3 level, and should be right there controlling the race from the outset.

 

Neil’s Best Bet – My Gladiola ($12.00)

My Gladiola represents the value in the Moir Stakes.

She's still lightly raced, has already shown she's a very smart mare and comes into this first-up assignment with an excellent fresh record.

Her preparation has been exactly what I wanted to see, with two winning jump-outs putting her in a position to fire immediately.

She'll drift back from the early speed, but the middle barrier gives her options rather than forcing her into one particular pattern.

That's particularly important at Sandown.

If the pressure goes on between Cavalry Girl and Natural Fling and the field begins searching away from the inside later in the day, My Gladiola should be able to build momentum into the race and unleash her finish down the long straight.

In an open Group 1 where the favourite looks short enough, My Gladiola is the one I want to be with at around $12.00.
