Morphettville hosts one of the premier sprint features for fillies and mares this weekend, with the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes shaping as a wide-open contest over 1200m.

Run under weight-for-age conditions, this race consistently attracts a deep and competitive field, and this year is no exception. A mix of proven Group performers, emerging sprinters and runners coming through key form races all converge, making this one of the trickier Group 1s to dissect.

With no clear standout and multiple runners bringing different profiles into the race, this sets up as a genuine betting race where price and positioning will be key.

Robert Sangster Stakes Preview 2026

Track Conditions

• Current Rating: Good range expected
• Distance: 1200m
• Conditions: Weight-for-age
• Track Bias: Typically fair, with wider lanes often coming into play

Speed Map & Race Shape

There is clear intent early here and this should be genuinely run.

Bridal Waltz and Bossy Benita look the two most likely to roll forward and take up the running, with Charm Stone also pushing up from a wide draw to sit right on the speed.

That creates early pressure rather than a soft lead.

Just behind them, Generosity gets the perfect run from the inside draw, likely landing in the box seat, while Stretan Angel maps for a soft run just off the leaders and looks ideally positioned.

Midfield is stacked with chances including Super Smink, Benedetta and Ameena, all of whom should get cover but will need the gaps at the right time.

Further back, Flying For Fun and My Gladiola are likely to settle off pace, relying on tempo to bring them into the race, while Point Barrow is the big query runner with no clear early position and likely conceding a start from the wide draw.

Race Shape:

With multiple runners pushing forward, this should be run at a solid tempo.

That suits horses getting cover just behind the speed.

Those forced to work early could be vulnerable late, while runners settling midfield with cover look to get the ideal setup.

If the pressure builds, it brings the off-speed runners right into play.

Key Race Factors

• Inside draws are valuable with pressure expected from wider gates
• Strong 1200m performers are favoured over those stretching at the trip
• Several runners come through forgive runs, creating value opportunities
• Race likely favours those settling just off the speed rather than leading

Selections & Analysis

1st – #7 Flying For Fun ($13.00)

Flying For Fun looks the value runner in the race.

Her last start can be completely overlooked after covering ground throughout without cover, which told late.

Prior to that, her form was strong against quality opposition and she has the turn of foot to match it with these.

If she gets cover and a drag into the race, she has the change-up speed to finish over the top.

2nd – #17 Point Barrow ($4.80)

An emerging mare with plenty of upside.

She comes into this off a strong win and has been kept on the fresh side for this target.

The wide draw makes things tricky, but in a race with tempo, it may allow her to slot in and build into the race.

If she handles the setup, she is right in the finish.

3rd – #6 Bridal Waltz ($8.00)

Brings strong recent form and looks well suited here.

Her effort in a high-pressure sprint last start showed she can match it at this level, and she now gets a setup that should allow her to control or sit right on the speed.

She will give a strong sight.

4th – #5 Super Smink ($14.00)

Her first-up performance was outstanding, coming from well back to win impressively.

She will likely concede ground again, but if the tempo is strong, she is one of the runners capable of finishing over the top late.

Race Summary

This shapes as one of the more open Group 1 sprints on the calendar, with plenty of speed engaged and multiple winning chances across the field.

The race looks set to favour runners who can settle just off the pace and finish strongly, with tempo expected to play a major role.

Flying For Fun gets the nod as the value play with the right setup, while Point Barrow brings upside, Bridal Waltz maps to control the race and Super Smink adds a strong late finishing profile.

A genuine betting race where getting the run in transit will be everything.
