Horse Racing Tips for The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes 2026

Another fascinating Group 1 contest awaits at Caulfield on Saturday, with the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m bringing together a deep field and a very different tactical challenge.

There doesn't appear to be an abundance of early speed, but that doesn't necessarily mean they'll crawl throughout.

Look for the pressure to build from around the 600m as riders look to get moving before the sprint goes on.

That scenario could play directly into the hands of a talented five-year-old with some unfinished business in this race.

Angel Capital endured a luckless defeat in last year's Sir Rupert Clarke and returns 12 months later with the opportunity to settle the score and land his Group 1 breakthrough.

Track Conditions

Caulfield is headed towards a Good 4 with no rain expected.

The bigger consideration is the rail moving out to 7m, having been at 4m three weeks ago.

By this stage of the meeting, those racing closer to the speed could be working through more worn ground. That may open the door for horses building momentum wider out and coming from off the pace.

The early races will tell us plenty, but I'm expecting the wider lanes to become increasingly important as the meeting progresses.

 

The Speed Map

Regal Award resumes and looks the most likely leader, while Lady Shenandoah should enjoy an economical run behind the speed from her inside draw. Feroce can also roll forward.

Evaporate should find a position a few lengths from the leaders alongside Planet Red, while Yellow Jersey will need to work across from a wider barrier.

Sepals can settle in that next group with cover. War Machine also needs to find a position from out wide, with Persian Spirit drawn further out again.

Angel Capital should settle in the second half of the field and away from the fence. Warnie and Sun God are likely to be positioned to his inside.

Expect Tom Kitten to drift back from his wide draw and join the final group alongside the resuming Von Hauke, second-up Sabaj and third-up Recon.

With only moderate early speed, the crucial part of the race could arrive a long way from home. Riders sitting midfield and beyond won't want to concede first run when the pressure goes on.

 

The Favourite – Lady Shenandoah

Lady Shenandoah deserves her position towards the top of the market after chasing home two of racing's biggest names first-up.

She stays at 1400m, has drawn to receive a soft run and boasts an excellent second-up record.

There are still enough questions to make the early $4.80 look too short.

If the race changes complexion from the 600m and those around her start building momentum, she could find herself momentarily flat-footed. That becomes an even bigger concern if the inside section has deteriorated by this stage of the meeting.

She's a high-class mare and a genuine winning chance, but I'd prefer her over further.

Closer to $7.00 is my mark.

 

 

The Dangers

Sepals ($11.00) returns after two jump-outs and has already proven how dangerous he can be when fresh. He's drawn to find cover and, importantly, returns as the defending Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes champion. At double figures, he has to be respected.

Warnie ($9.50) arrives ready to peak third-up after a dominant Group 3 victory. The draw should allow him to conserve energy with cover before looking for clear running. If the gap appears over the final 450m, he'll get his chance to make his presence felt.

Lady Shenandoah ($4.80) remains firmly among the leading chances despite the price looking skinny. She gets a soft run second-up, loves dry ground and brings genuine Group 1 quality.

Tom Kitten ($26.00) will need plenty to unfold in his favour from the back, but that's reflected in the price. He stays at 1400m second-up and possesses the acceleration to charge into the race if the leaders begin to tire.

 

Neil’s Best Bet – #Angel Capital ($8.50)

This is Group 1 breakthrough time for Angel Capital.

He's an ultra-talented stallion who hasn't always made life easy for himself, but the timing looks right third-up and back onto firmer ground.

There is also some serious unfinished business.

Angel Capital produced arguably the biggest performance of his career in this race 12 months ago. He found himself in an almost impossible position before launching late to finish only a length from the winner.

His second-up run behind Beiwacht in the Memsie Stakes wasn't anywhere near as impressive, but the circumstances were completely different. The race developed off a moderate tempo on a shifty surface and never gave him the right platform to produce his best.

Saturday should provide a different dynamic.

The pressure should build earlier, the firmer ground is in his favour and the draw gives him the opportunity to get away from the inside and start gathering momentum from around the 550m.

If Angel Capital gets clear air and is allowed to build through his gears before straightening, he gets his chance to finally land that elusive Group 1.

At around $8.50, he's the bet.
