While much of the attention turns towards Flemington and the Cox Plate this Saturday, Royal Randwick hosts another outstanding Group 1 contest with the 2026 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000m.
And this year's edition looks a particularly attractive betting race.
The field brings together some of Australia's most promising three-year-olds, with several different form lines converging in a contest where there appears to be very little separating the leading chances.
Last-start Group 1 Flight Stakes winner Global Goal heads the market around $3, ahead of the unbeaten Proxima Dea at $5, who arrives following her determined victory in the Gloaming Stakes.
Both fillies bring outstanding credentials, but history suggests they'll face a difficult challenge against the colts and geldings.
With an evenly matched field, an intriguing tactical setup and several runners stepping up to 2000m for the first time, there could be plenty of value away from the favourites.
After assessing the form, I believe one runner has been significantly overlooked by the market.
Godolphin's Diameter is my selection to win the Spring Champion Stakes at $15.
Cody Lane’s 2026 Spring Champion Stakes Preview 23/10/26
Randwick Track Conditions
Current Track Rating: Good 4
Expected Race-Day Rating: Good 4
Rail Position: +6m
Randwick was rated Good 4 on Thursday morning, with some rainfall forecast over the following two days.
However, warm and dry conditions are expected on Saturday, and I'm anticipating a Good 4 surface by the time the Spring Champion Stakes field jumps.
The rail moves out to 6m after racing at 3m for Everest Day, when the track performed exceptionally well.
I expect another fair racing surface, with runners having every opportunity to perform regardless of their preferred racing pattern.
That should make race positioning and tempo particularly important.
Spring Champion Stakes Speed Map
The race looks likely to be run at a moderate tempo, with only a handful of runners expected to push forward.
Leader – Cormier
Cormier (Barrier 8) looks the most likely leader.
The Maurice colt produced his strongest performance of the preparation last start when allowed to roll forward and dictate proceedings.
With that positive result behind him, I expect connections to adopt similar tactics.
Aaron Bullock should push forward from the wide draw and attempt to control the race from the front.
On-Pace – Proxima Dea, Scarole & Wonka
Proxima Dea (Barrier 9) has shown tactical versatility throughout her preparation, having led twice while settling around midfield on her other two appearances.
Given the expected lack of genuine speed, I anticipate she'll work forward and settle outside Cormier.
That should place her in an excellent position to challenge approaching the home turn.
Scarole (Barrier 4) looks likely to secure an economical run behind the leaders.
He could find the box seat, although that position may be occupied by Wonka (Barrier 2) if connections elect to make use of the inside draw.
Scarole could alternatively settle one-out and one-back.
Midfield – Global Goal, Diameter & Mindgames
Race favourite Global Goal (Barrier 3) should settle within striking distance of the leaders.
With several of her main rivals expected to race prominently, connections won't want to concede too much ground early.
Diameter (Barrier 6) should settle around midfield, giving him the opportunity to build momentum before the home turn.
Mindgames (Barrier 1) is also likely to settle in the middle division after drawing the inside barrier.
Rear – Persian Wonder & Stormy Marco
Persian Wonder (Barrier 5) and Stormy Marco (Barrier 7) appear the most likely runners to settle towards the rear.
Both may need the tempo to increase through the middle stages to give them an opportunity to work into the race.

Expected Race Shape
I'm anticipating a slow-to-moderate tempo, with Cormier controlling proceedings and Proxima Dea positioned outside him.
That could make it difficult for runners settling too far back, particularly if the leaders are allowed to conserve energy before sprinting home.
However, with the majority of the field relatively evenly matched on exposed form, a well-timed move could prove decisive.
Spring Champion Stakes – Key Historical Trends
There are several interesting historical factors worth considering when assessing this year's field.
| Statistic | Historical Record |
|---|---|
| Most successful barrier | Barrier 8 – seven winners |
| Recent male dominance | Colts and geldings have won the past five editions |
| Last filly to win | Montefilia (2020) |
| Fillies to win in the past 55 years | Three |
| Key lead-up race | Gloaming Stakes – ten subsequent winners |
The record of fillies is particularly interesting given that Global Goal and Proxima Dea occupy the top two positions in betting.
Only three fillies have won the Spring Champion Stakes in the past 55 years:
-
Yankee Rose (2016)
-
Maid Of Heaven (2018)
-
Montefilia (2020)
That doesn't mean either favourite is incapable of winning, but it highlights the challenge they face against the colts and geldings.
The Gloaming Stakes is another important reference, having produced ten subsequent Spring Champion Stakes winners.
However, this year's Gloaming featured a tightly packed finish, making it difficult to establish how much separates the runners coming through that race.
That uncertainty is one of the reasons I'm looking towards an alternative form line for my top selection.
Cody Lane’s Spring Champion Stakes Selections & Analysis
1st – #1 Diameter ($15.00)
Best Bet – Spring Champion Stakes
Diameter is the forgotten runner in this year's Spring Champion Stakes, and I believe he's significantly over the odds at $15.
The Godolphin-trained colt brings a different form line into the race, but there are strong reasons to believe he's every bit as competitive as several runners much shorter in betting.
Two starts ago, Diameter defeated Scarole at Caulfield.
It was only a narrow victory, but the significance of that performance becomes clearer when examining Scarole's subsequent form.
Scarole went on to feature in the tightly contested finish of the Gloaming Stakes, which also involved Proxima Dea, Stormy Marco, Cormier and Wonka.
That creates an important connection between the form lines.
If Diameter can defeat Scarole, and Scarole is competitive against the Gloaming runners, then why is Diameter being offered at such a substantially bigger price?
That's the question I'm asking.
His latest performance in the Caulfield Guineas can also be forgiven.
Diameter settled too far back in a race dominated by runners positioned closer to the speed.
Given the way that contest unfolded, he was never realistically placed to challenge for victory.
I don't believe that result accurately reflects his ability.
This assignment provides an opportunity to assess him under different conditions, and the expected race map should allow him to settle closer to the action.
Importantly, the exposed form across this field is extremely even.
There isn't a significant gap between the leading contenders, yet the betting market suggests Diameter is considerably inferior to several of his rivals.
I strongly disagree.
The Brazen Beau colt has demonstrated enough ability to be competitive, and his form through Scarole provides an excellent reference.
At $15, Diameter is my Best Bet and the runner I want to be with in the 2026 Spring Champion Stakes.
2nd – #8 Global Goal ($3.00)
Global Goal brings the strongest recent Group 1 form into the race following her outstanding victory in the Flight Stakes.
She was particularly impressive over 1600m, producing a dynamic performance and finishing powerfully to claim the feature.
That effort confirmed she's one of the most talented fillies of her generation.
Her barrier is another major advantage.
From gate three, Global Goal should secure an excellent position behind the leading division, giving her every opportunity to challenge when the race begins to unfold.
The major question is the rise to 2000m.
Trainer John Sargent has indicated that she isn't necessarily a natural staying filly, which creates some uncertainty about how effectively she'll handle the additional distance.
However, Sargent has an outstanding reputation for preparing three-year-old fillies to perform over staying trips.
That experience is a significant positive.
Global Goal is arguably the most talented horse in the field based on exposed form, and her Flight Stakes victory sets a strong standard.
If she runs out the 2000m strongly, she'll be extremely difficult to beat.
But at around $3, the distance query is enough for me to look elsewhere for value.
Verdict: The class runner of the field and a major winning chance, provided she handles the rise to 2000m.
3rd – #9 Proxima Dea ($5.00)
Proxima Dea arrives with an unbeaten record and plenty of confidence following her determined Gloaming Stakes victory.
What impressed me most about that performance wasn't simply the result.
It was the way she responded when the race appeared to be slipping away.
After coming under pressure, Proxima Dea rallied strongly and found another effort to maintain her perfect record.
That determination is an excellent quality in a young horse stepping up to Group 1 company.
The Gloaming Stakes has historically been an important lead-up to this race, although the closely contested finish makes the form somewhat difficult to assess.
I'm not convinced there's a significant gap between the runners coming through that event.
However, I also don't expect the horses she defeated to turn the tables easily.
Another major positive is her suitability over longer distances.
Trainer David Payne has expressed confidence that Proxima Dea will appreciate stepping up in trip, and her strong finish in the Gloaming certainly supports that assessment.
She's also demonstrated an ability to win under a variety of track conditions.
That versatility is particularly valuable at this time of year, when the weather can change quickly.
From a tactical perspective, Proxima Dea should settle prominently and enjoy every opportunity.
Verdict: An unbeaten filly with excellent staying potential, tactical speed and the determination to fight out another finish.
4th – #5 Stormy Marco ($7.00)
Stormy Marco is another runner coming through the Gloaming Stakes, and I believe he's one of the horses most likely to benefit from the rise to 2000m.
His previous performances suggest there's further improvement to come as he steps up in distance.
That assessment does involve some speculation, particularly given the limited staying experience of several runners in this field.
However, his overall profile is extremely appealing.
Stormy Marco is now fourth-up from a spell, which looks an ideal stage of his preparation to produce a peak performance.
And when you're dealing with a Chris Waller-trained runner stepping up to a suitable distance in a major spring feature, it's always worth paying attention.
Waller has built an outstanding reputation for preparing horses to reach their peak on the biggest race days.
Stormy Marco looks the type of runner who could produce his best performance when it matters most.
The concern is his likely position towards the rear of the field.
If Cormier is allowed to control a slow tempo, Stormy Marco may be forced to make up significant ground in the straight.
Nevertheless, the rise in distance and fourth-up fitness profile make him a genuine contender.
Verdict: A progressive stayer who looks ready to peak fourth-up and should appreciate the additional distance.
Cody Lane’s Spring Champion Stakes Top Four
| Rank | Runner | Odds |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | #1 Diameter | $15.00 |
| 2nd | #8 Global Goal | $3.00 |
| 3rd | #9 Proxima Dea | $5.00 |
| 4th | #5 Stormy Marco | $7.00 |
Spring Champion Stakes Final Verdict
This year's Spring Champion Stakes shapes as one of the more intriguing Group 1 betting contests of the spring.
The two leading fillies, Global Goal and Proxima Dea, bring outstanding credentials and deserve their positions near the top of the market.
Global Goal has the strongest Group 1 form following her Flight Stakes victory, while Proxima Dea arrives unbeaten after an impressive display of determination in the Gloaming Stakes.
Stormy Marco also appeals as a runner who could produce significant improvement fourth-up over 2000m.
However, I believe the market has underestimated Diameter.
His victory over Scarole provides a direct connection to several of the leading contenders, and his Caulfield Guineas defeat can be forgiven given the race pattern.
With so little separating the main chances on exposed form, the difference between $15 and the much shorter prices of his rivals is difficult to justify.
That's what makes him such an appealing betting proposition.
