Horse Racing Tips for the Tancred Stakes 2026

The key question heading into the Group 1 Tancred Stakes over 2400 metres at Rosehill is simple.
Is this a two-horse showdown?
Hot favourite Aeliana comes off a fighting Group 1 win third-up over 2000 metres just seven days ago, while high-class international Dubai Honour resumes, having not been seen since mid-December.
Outside of those two, Vauban was the only other runner holding single-figure odds early in what is a compact field of eight.
As is often the case in these staying contests, tempo and tactics through the middle stages will be crucial, particularly in a race that does not look to have a great deal of early pressure.

Neil Evans – Tancred Stakes Preview 2026
Rosehill | Group 1 Tancred Stakes (2400m)
Track Conditions
The track is expected to sit in the Soft 6 to Soft 7 range, with rain forecast in the 24 hours leading into the race.
However, with no further rain predicted on race day, conditions should remain away from heavy territory, giving all runners their chance.
Speed Map & Race Shape
Vauban is expected to roll forward from a good draw and take up the lead.
Dubai Honour can position just off the speed, settling a couple of lengths back and off the fence, with River Of Stars likely to hold a position to his inside.
Zarir should land midfield along the rail, with Aeliana positioned centrally in the run.
Piggyback is expected to settle slightly worse than midfield.
Soul Of Spain will drift back towards the rear, with Valiant King likely to settle last.
With limited early pressure, this shapes as a race where riders may build momentum from as far out as the 800m to 1000m mark, making positioning critical.
The Favourite
Aeliana’s narrow win over Lindermann in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes had merit, but there is some query whether she deserves to be as short as $1.70 stepping up to 2400 metres.
While she is entitled to head the market under weight-for-age conditions, anything under $2.20 looks under the odds, particularly in a race that may develop into a tactical staying contest without strong early speed.
Her run prior, finishing within half a length of Autumn Glow over a mile, was excellent.
Still, there is a possibility she has already peaked this preparation, which raises a question at this longer trip.
Neil’s Best Bet
Dubai Honour
Even at this stage of his career, Dubai Honour remains a lightly raced and high-quality international stayer.
This will be just his 36th career start, and historically he has performed well when fresh.
His most recent runs came on synthetic tracks, where he was narrowly beaten at Southwell before carrying 64kg to a dominant win at Kempton Park.
Before that, he ran an excellent race in France, narrowly beaten in a strong Group 2 contest.
Carrying 59kg under weight-for-age conditions is no concern, and his versatility allows him to settle either on speed or just off it, depending on how the race unfolds.
The Dangers
Aeliana
Very classy mare who maps to get a solid run. The obvious quinella horse.
Vauban
Strong winner of the Group 3 Sky High Stakes and looks suited stepping up to 2400 metres.
Soul Of Spain
Closed off well behind Vauban and is capable of peaking fourth-up at this distance.

Soul Of Spain
This year’s Tancred Stakes shapes as a tactical staying contest, where positioning and timing will be everything.
With limited early speed, expect the race to develop into a test of stamina and decision-making from the halfway point, with the winner likely to be the runner who can build momentum at the right time and sustain it through the long Rosehill straight.
