Horse Racing Tips for the Victoria Derby 2025

An Option to beat the Favourite

A short-priced favourite coming off one of the most arrogant wins you’ll see, one other runner in single figures and the rest apparently there to make up the numbers.
Welcome to the 2025 Group 1 Victoria Derby.
A race that used to unearth the country’s next great stayers, but now looks more like a case of “who can run the trip.”
In an era where genuine staying three-year-olds are a rare breed, this year’s edition feels very much like a match race on paper.
That said, don’t be so quick to declare it over.
The favourite might be a machine, but he’s also likely to cop a bit more heat early than he’s used to.
And when a few of these longshots roll the dice from the 1000m mark, things could get interesting late.

Neil Evans – 2025 Victoria Derby Feature Preview
Track Conditions:
Expect a Soft 5 with the rail True, ensuring a fair surface through the early races.
By the time the Derby rolls around, expect winners to start coming a few lanes off the fence as the inside chops out.
Off-speed runners tracking into the three and four-wide line may hold a late advantage over the final furlong.
Speed Map:
The hot favourite Observer looks the natural leader from his low draw, with Highvol and Matsuda crossing over from wider barriers to keep him company.
Azazel and O’Sheamus get soft runs just behind them, while Amazake and Deal Done Fast will look to hold their ground closer to the rail.
Midfield, we’ll likely see Autumn Mystery, Arcora, and Engine Of War, while Miewa and Options settle around the middle.
Further back, Providence and Savisanta will look to find cover and come with one sustained run from the 600m.
The Favourite:
Observer ($2.00)
Dominant last start in the Group 2 Vase at Moonee Valley, barely getting out of second gear.
He’s clearly the class runner, and the 2500m shouldn’t bother him in the slightest.
His natural on-speed style and stamina give him every right to justify the short quote, but this will be no solo lap.
I am expecting a few rivals to test his patience before the home turn.
Neil’s Best Bet:
Options (Each Way – $17.00)
Forget the run in the Vase.
He was smashed around, shuffled back and still managed to close off only four lengths behind Observer, who had the race sewn up at the 200m.
He’s bred to stay, he’s improving sharply, and he’ll relish the wide expanses of Flemington.
If the pressure goes on early and Observer doesn’t get things all his own way, Options is the one charging late.
The Dangers:
Observer – Still the horse to beat, class act with upside, but he’ll face more pressure this time.
Providence – Strong closer from the Vase, will appreciate the extra ground and should be peaking here.
Savisanta – Big improver from the Geelong Classic, looks a sneaky top-four chance at a huge price.
O’Sheamus – Honest, stays all day, and could be grinding home into a placing.
Neil’s Top Five:
-
Options (Each Way)
-
Observer
-
Providence
-
Savisanta
-
O’Sheamus
Boxed Exacta: 1, 5, 6 – a little insurance if the favourite holds strong.
