The 171st edition of the Group 1 Victoria Derby shapes as one of the most open and competitive races of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with a quality field of three-year-olds preparing to tackle the famous 2500m staying test at Flemington.

Unlike last year's edition, which looked a one-act affair on paper and ultimately played out that way, this year's Derby presents a genuine betting challenge.

Cormier heads the early market at $4.60, but there are several runners with legitimate winning claims, including Stormy Marco, Cignetti and Vallice.

With plenty of early speed, uncertain track conditions and several runners stepping up to the testing 2500m journey, finding the winner won't be straightforward.

However, that's what makes this year's Derby such an appealing betting race.

Cody Lane is siding with Stormy Marco, believing the Chris Waller-trained colt is perfectly placed to produce his best performance with James McDonald returning to the saddle.

Cody Lane’s 2026 Victoria Derby Preview

Flemington Track Conditions

Track Information Details
Current Track Rating Good 4
Expected Track Rating Soft 6
Rail Position True
Distance 2500m
Race Group 1 Victoria Derby

Flemington was rated a Good 4 on Thursday morning, but the weather forecast suggests conditions could change considerably before Saturday's feature.

Showers are predicted for Saturday morning, with the possibility of a thunderstorm adding further uncertainty.

The amount of rainfall will ultimately determine how the track plays, although Flemington's excellent drainage means it would take significant rain to push the surface into the Heavy range.

For the purposes of this preview, I'm expecting the track to be somewhere in the Soft range when the Derby gets underway, with a Soft 6 my predicted rating.

The running rail remains in the True position, which should provide all runners with a fair opportunity.

As always, monitoring the track pattern throughout the earlier races will be important, particularly with rain potentially arriving during the meeting.

Victoria Derby Speed Map & Expected Race Shape

There's no shortage of runners who prefer to race prominently, and that should ensure a genuine tempo throughout the 2500m contest.

With several horses looking to secure forward positions, the opening stages could prove particularly important.

Leaders – Cormier & Quick Finish

Race favourite Cormier (barrier 3) looks the most likely leader.

He's produced two excellent performances racing on the speed at his past two starts, and the inside draw should allow him to push forward and take up his preferred position.

However, he won't necessarily have things his own way.

Quick Finish (barrier 10) also likes to race prominently and could work across to challenge for the lead.

With both runners possessing early speed, there's the potential for genuine pressure at the front.

On-Pace – Meet The Prince, Written Empire, Cold Shower, Icy You, King Snitz, Cignetti & Skua

A large group of runners is expected to settle just behind the leaders, making the battle for early positions particularly interesting.

Written Empire (barrier 2) and Cold Shower (barrier 4) appear best placed to secure the ideal runs immediately behind the speed.

Both have favourable draws and should be able to settle into comfortable positions without covering unnecessary ground.

Meet The Prince, Icy You, King Snitz, Cignetti and Skua are also expected to push forward and compete for positions in the leading division.

With so many runners looking to settle close to the pace, there could be plenty of pressure through the early and middle stages.

Midfield – Russian Rock, Vallice, True Tone, True Rebel & Murshidi

Several of the leading Derby chances should settle around midfield.

Russian Rock (barrier 6) looks well placed to secure cover, while Vallice (barrier 13) and True Tone (barrier 14) should also be able to find suitable positions.

True Rebel and Murshidi present interesting tactical challenges.

True Rebel (barrier 16) and Murshidi (barrier 17) generally prefer to race further forward, but their wide draws could make that approach costly.

Rather than risk being caught wide throughout the race, I expect both runners to be restrained and settle around midfield.

Rear – Locked In, King Winston & Stormy Marco

Stormy Marco (barrier 15) is expected to settle towards the rear of the field.

His wide draw makes it difficult to secure a prominent position without using considerable energy, so allowing him to find his feet early looks the most sensible approach.

He should be joined towards the back by Locked In (barrier 7) and King Winston (barrier 8).

While settling towards the rear can be a disadvantage in slowly run staying races, I believe Saturday's expected tempo could work strongly in Stormy Marco's favour.

Expected Race Shape

I'm anticipating a solidly run Derby.

Cormier and Quick Finish should establish the early speed, while several runners behind them will be looking to secure favourable positions.

With so many horses wanting to race towards the front, the pressure could remain genuine throughout the middle stages.

That creates an interesting scenario for the backmarkers.

If the leaders begin to feel the effects of the early pressure approaching the home turn, runners capable of sustaining a long finishing run could be ideally placed to take advantage.

This is the main reason I'm siding with Stormy Marco.

His ability to settle back and finish strongly could prove decisive over Flemington's testing 2500m journey.

Cody Lane’s Victoria Derby Selections & Analysis

1st – #2 Stormy Marco ($4.80)

There's a real sense of timing surrounding Stormy Marco heading into the Victoria Derby.

The Chris Waller-trained colt has been building towards this assignment throughout the preparation, and everything appears to be coming together at the right time.

One of the biggest positives is the return of James McDonald.

McDonald is back aboard for the Group 1 feature, reuniting with a horse he spoke very highly of before the spring campaign began.

That confidence is worth respecting, particularly given McDonald's association with the Waller stable and his experience in major races.

Stormy Marco's latest performance in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes was better than the result might suggest.

He finished strongly behind Proxima Dea in a race where making ground from the rear was particularly difficult.

Despite the race shape working against him, he continued to find the line well.

That performance suggested he's ready for the rise to 2500m, and I believe the extra distance will suit.

Cormier finished ahead of him in the Spring Champion Stakes and understandably commands plenty of respect heading into Saturday.

However, the circumstances could be very different at Flemington.

With several runners expected to push forward, I'm anticipating a much stronger tempo than Stormy Marco encountered last start.

That should give him the opportunity to settle towards the rear before building momentum and making a sustained run around the field.

The long Flemington straight will also provide him with plenty of time to work through his gears.

As a son of Wootton Bassett, Stormy Marco is an exciting staying prospect who looks ready to produce a career-best performance.

If the leaders begin to tire after absorbing early pressure, I expect him to be one of the strongest runners late.

Cody's Verdict: Stormy Marco looks perfectly timed for the Derby. His strong finish in the Spring Champion Stakes, the return of James McDonald and the expected genuine tempo make him my top selection at $4.80.

2nd – #8 Cignetti ($14)

Cignetti is one of the most interesting runners in this year's Derby and looks excellent value at double-figure odds.

The son of Super Seth was the horse I wanted to follow out of the Group 3 Caulfield Classic.

In my opinion, he should have won that race.

Despite finishing behind King Snitz and Vallice, Cignetti produced an outstanding closing effort that suggested he was the runner with the most improvement to come.

He recorded the fastest final 200m of the Caulfield Classic and continued strongly beyond the winning post.

That finishing effort is particularly encouraging heading into a 2500m staying contest.

The extra distance should give him the opportunity to build momentum and sustain his run rather than relying on a short sprint.

What makes him even more appealing is the market.

Cignetti is currently longer odds than both King Snitz and Vallice, despite having strong claims that he should have beaten them at Caulfield.

At $14, that creates a genuine betting opportunity.

The booking of William Pike is another significant positive.

Pike has already delivered two feature Group 1 victories this spring and will be looking to add another major success aboard the talented gelding.

His ability to time a finishing run could prove crucial in a race where the tempo is expected to be strong.

If Cignetti can settle comfortably and reproduce his Caulfield Classic finish, he's capable of making a serious impact.

Cody's Verdict: Cignetti was desperately unlucky in the Caulfield Classic and looks overpriced at $14. His powerful finishing sectionals suggest he'll appreciate the Derby distance, and William Pike is a major positive.

3rd – #1 Cormier ($4.80)

Cormier is a deserving favourite after producing two excellent performances racing on the speed.

The son of Maurice has demonstrated both toughness and consistency throughout his recent assignments, and his racing style should give him every opportunity to be competitive again.

His latest efforts suggest he has the stamina required to run a strong 2500m.

That's a major consideration in the Victoria Derby, where the additional distance can expose runners who have been relying on speed rather than genuine staying ability.

Cormier also comes from a stable in outstanding form.

Trainers Messara and Gavranich have produced six winners from their past 14 runners, an excellent strike rate heading into one of the biggest meetings of the spring.

Connections have always held Cormier in high regard, and his recent performances have justified that confidence.

Barrier three is another advantage.

He should be able to push forward without using too much energy and secure his preferred position close to the lead.

However, the expected race pressure is my main concern.

Quick Finish is another runner who likes to lead, while several others will be looking to settle prominently.

That could make it difficult for Cormier to control the race as comfortably as he might prefer.

If he gets an uncontested lead or the tempo is only moderate, he'll be extremely difficult to run down.

In fact, with less expected pressure up front, I would have Cormier ahead of Stormy Marco in my selections.

But given how I expect the race to unfold, I'm favouring the stronger finishing profile of Stormy Marco.

Cody's Verdict: Cormier has the form, barrier and staying potential to win the Derby. My only concern is the amount of early pressure he's likely to face.

4th – #6 Vallice ($13)

Vallice is another runner who has been building towards the Victoria Derby for some time.

This has always been the stable's intended target, and his preparation suggests he's ready to peak for Saturday's Group 1 feature.

The Ciaron Maher stable has enjoyed an outstanding spring and has consistently demonstrated an ability to have runners performing at their best for major races.

That makes Vallice particularly interesting.

His latest performance came in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic, where he suffered a narrow defeat.

It was an encouraging Derby lead-up, and there's every reason to believe the additional distance will suit.

Mark Zahra retains the ride after partnering Vallice in the Caulfield Classic.

That continuity is another positive, particularly given the importance of tactical decisions over the demanding 2500m journey.

Zahra and Maher have combined for a 20.9% winning strike rate, highlighting the success of their partnership.

Vallice is expected to settle around midfield from barrier 13, where Zahra will be looking to secure cover and conserve energy for the final stages.

If he can obtain a favourable position without covering too much ground, he should be capable of making his presence felt.

The Caulfield Classic form also deserves respect.

While I believe Cignetti was the unlucky runner from that race, there's a strong case for the winner, King Snitz, and Vallice heading into the Derby.

Both have demonstrated the ability to compete at this level, and the extra distance could bring further improvement.

Cody's Verdict: Vallice has been specifically prepared for the Derby and comes from a stable with an excellent record in major races. Mark Zahra sticking with him is another positive, and he deserves consideration at $13.

Cody Lane’s 2026 Victoria Derby Top Four

1st #2 Stormy Marco $4.80
2nd #8 Cignetti $14.00
3rd #1 Cormier $4.80
4th #6 Vallice $13.00

Victoria Derby Final Verdict

The 2026 Victoria Derby shapes as a fascinating staying contest, with several runners bringing strong form into the 2500m Group 1 feature.

Cormier deserves his position near the top of the market after two excellent on-speed performances, and his favourable barrier should allow him to settle prominently.

However, the expected pressure from Quick Finish and several other forward runners could make his task more difficult.

Cignetti is the runner I believe offers the most appeal at double-figure odds after his outstanding closing effort in the Caulfield Classic.

Vallice also commands respect, particularly given the Maher stable's preparation for this race and Mark Zahra's decision to retain the ride.

But Stormy Marco is the horse I want to be with.

His latest performance in the Spring Champion Stakes suggested he's ready for the rise in distance, and the expected genuine tempo should give him the opportunity to finish over the top of his rivals.

With James McDonald returning to the saddle and the long Flemington straight working in his favour, everything looks in place for a peak performance.
