Race 6 – #4 Spywire

Spywire returned in career-best form first-up in testing conditions and there’s every reason to expect further improvement second-up.

He was spotting his rivals 3.4 lengths at the 400m yet still produced the fastest last 600m of the entire meeting, making decisive ground between the 400m and 200m before asserting late.

The strength of that form has since been franked, with the runner-up Hawker Hall coming out and winning impressively at Rosehill on Saturday.

Spywire strips fitter here, finds a very favourable speed map, and looks ideally placed to stalk a genuine tempo.

When the leaders start to feel the pinch, he should be poised to pounce.

He’s returned in excellent order and looks set to go on with it this preparation.

Race 7 – #5 Wittelsbach

Wittelsbach delivered a huge performance second-up when rising sharply in trip from 1600m to 2100m, producing a powerful finish that included an 11.16 closing 200m.

This was the second-fastest of the meeting. That was a genuine high-quality staying performance.

The depth of that form has stood up well.

Third-placed Fulmen Flou, beaten 6.8 lengths, has since overcome issues in running to win convincingly at Armidale, while fourth-placed Think Of One has also franked the race by finishing second on the Beaumont track at Newcastle.

Wittelsbach gains the services of Tommy Sherry, who is riding in career-best form with a 21% strike rate over the past 90 days.

From the wide draw, expect her to be ridden patiently before being brought into the race from around the 600m.

If she gets a clean steer, the form suggests she’ll be right in the finish.
