Lay Betting Tips: Who to avoid on the punt 16/5/26

Big Doomben Doubts

This week we focus on two excellent risks at Doomben on a major Group 1 race day, where both favourites appear severely overbet given the likely extreme track conditions.
Early in the day we are against the popular Bjorn Baker and James McDonald combination, where even proven wet track form may count for little on what shapes as an extremely testing surface.
Later in the feature Doomben 10,000, another high-profile runner faces similar concerns with no exposed Heavy track form and conditions likely to deteriorate significantly by the end of the program.
Saturday Lays of the Day 16/5/26
Doomben Race 1 #2 Midnight Dynamite $2.70
Happy to oppose the Bjorn Baker and James McDonald combination here, with the market appearing far too confident about his chances on what could be a bottomless surface.
While his wet track statistics are strong, there is a major difference between handling a normal Heavy track and racing on an extreme rain affected surface where conditions become unfamiliar for every horse.
The market appears to be overplaying several factors including the wet track profile, the James McDonald booking, and the inside draw.
At this stage he already looks heavily found by recreational punters, and bookmakers are likely to keep him artificially short throughout betting due to expected turnover.
If the track deteriorates further, the advantage of proven wet form may disappear completely and bring the field right back together.
At the current quote he represents poor value.
Avoid.
Doomben Race 8 #1 Jimmysstar $3.30
Very keen to oppose Jimmy here, with conditions likely to resemble a complete bog by the final stages of the meeting.
He remains unproven on a Heavy surface and there is a significant difference between raw ability and actually handling extreme ground conditions under race pressure.
While he clearly possesses class, that may count for little if he fails to cope with the deteriorating surface.
The market appears convinced the wide draw will suit if runners are searching away from the inside lanes, however late in the day the entire track may be chopped up and no section offers a genuine advantage.
As a high profile runner he is naturally overbet in most races, and on this occasion the market may further exaggerate his chances due to theories around track pattern and lane bias.
At the current price he looks an excellent risk.
Lay.
