Lay Betting Tips: Who to avoid on the punt 26/9/26

This week we focus on two over-bet runners at Rosehill that both come up as excellent risks and should prove extremely popular with the mug punters.

Our first selection is a mare who may struggle from a fitness perspective against opposition deeper into their preparations, whilst the market appears far too carried away with her placing in what looked a questionable Newcastle Cup outside of the winner.

Whilst later in the day, a flashy last-start winner looks unsuited by the switch to Rosehill, where a significant rise in grade and the tighter turning circuit both appear against him.

Rosehill Race 3 #2 Bella Montagna $2.30

I feel this mare could be one run short from a fitness perspective, with several of her rivals deeper into their preparations and capable of turning up the pressure from a long way out.

She was solid in the Newcastle Cup last start, battling on to finish third of seven before her condition appeared to give out late.

However, she now strikes a deep city race that could prove stronger across the board than that Newcastle event.

The market appears far too carried away with the last start form, with the Aethelwulf form line seemingly the factor the mugs have latched onto.

Aside from finishing behind that runner in a small field, she did not beat much home on the day.

Against fitter opposition, I expect a few of these to pour on the pressure early and really test her when the race gets serious.

More than happy to take her on at the poison price, with the final 200 metres likely to expose any weakness in her fitness.

Avoid.

 

Rosehill Race 5 #6 Decorum $1.90

Very exposed to the market following the flashy last start victory at Randwick, where every man and his dog witnessed the impressive performance.

That almost guarantees he will be severely overbet here due to recency bias, with bookmakers likely to keep him artificially short throughout betting because of the expected weight of mug investment.

He is also forced to step up to Benchmark 88 grade, which represents a significant leap from the weaker Benchmark 78 race he won last start.

That rise in grade should not be underestimated.

The tighter turning Rosehill circuit also looks far less suitable for his typical get-back racing pattern.

He is a horse that likes to balance up before building through his gears with plenty of runway, conditions he may not receive here.

At $1.90, punters are being asked to take rock bottom odds on a horse rising sharply in grade and facing a race setup that looks significantly less favourable than last start.

The price is pure poison.
